Rogers HTC Dream/Magic Android Timestamp Problem

We are not even a week after launch and already problems have been arising with the new HTC Dream and HTC Magic from Rogers Wireless. Our first problem was the lack of a soft keyboard, but that was promptly fixed by some very savvy users.

The most recent issue however is one that cannot be fixed by a mere download. This problem can only be solved by making voices heard!

The Problem

Many people have reported that their HTC Dream or HTC Magic receives text messages in Eastern time, no matter what time zone they are currently in. In other words, the time stamp on a received text message is not the correct time. Rogers’ solution thus far has been to switch the phone to the 2G Network and turn off 3G, which in my opinion is not really a solution.

One user has managed to get a near fix by calling in to Rogers Tech Support and having his text message package reset. You can see the results on this here:

I have called Rogers tech support who removed and reinstated my text plan in an attempt to reset something. It now shows the CORRECT time stamp in the list of threads (when you first press “messages”), however, when you click on the thread, the time stamp changes to the wrong time again. When you go back to the list of threads, it’s now wrong there as well.

So how do we fix this?

Well, there is only one way. If you have an HTC Dream or HTC Magic from Rogers, call in to Rogers Technical Support (1-888-ROGERS1) and make a case of this problem. The support representative you speak with will log the problem and submit it, which hopefully with enough calls, will get the ball rolling a little faster on Rogers’ end.

Do you own either the HTC Dream or Magic? If so, post below what province you are in and whether you have experienced this problem or not. Afterwards, call Rogers Tech Support and make them note this issue!!!

i have this problem in victoria, bc. received messages show 3 hours ahead. my sent messages are fine. i called in and was told they knew about it… no timeframe to fix it, guy said he wasn’t even sure if they plan to. told me to switch to 2G, as if!!

ive read this was happening in the states w/ the G1′s until cupcake came out.

there are logged bug reports with google! get on it rogers! it seems the timestamps are locked to EST time.

going by this… bc should be 3 hours ahead, alberta 2, and ontario/que people probably don’t notice anything wrong. please add comments to confirm!

WORKAROUND (sort-of) i’ve been using chompsms instead of the the messaging program, and it seems to thread everything correctly. chomp for whatever reason puts your time stamp on the same time zone as the received, so if you are replying to a received text with EST time stamp, chomp makes yours EST as well.

works for sending too… the initial msg you send will show your proper time, the reply will in est, then when you reply it will be in eastern, threading properly. rogers still needs to fix this though!

While we’re on the topics of problems, does anyone else experience that the status light on the HTC magic only works on the right side, not the left side? Also I noticed the canadian app market doesn’t have some things the US one has =[ I so wanted pacman!

    • RT

You phone isn’t broken. There is only one status light by design. I downloaded the Magic documentation from the HTC site. According to it, there are 4 statuses:

Solid Green – Battery is fully charged
Solid Red – Battery is charging
Flashing Red – Battery is low
Flashing Green – You have a pending notification

As for the Canadian Android Market… it is still void of paid apps. I haven’t seen any indication from Rogers or Google of when that will change. As for Pac-Man specifically, I read it also wasn’t available in England, so it may be set by Namco.

In Manitoba, and experiencing the same issue — incoming timestamps show up in EST. They show up correctly in the list until I click on them, then when I go back they’re wrong (same as the quoted user in the posting).

i had this problem when i originally got my G1, and when i got upgraded to 1.5 cupcake the timestamp was correct,

during the time when it was wrong i disabled automatic time update, and manually changed the time zone to make the text time correct.

I think the time issue extends beyond messages. I have a few other applications that change the day two hours before midnight here in Calgary.

Netcounter for example resets the “today” counter at 10:00pm.

And I also wish the paid applications start showing up! I’d really like to use Documents To Go for my office documents. Thankfully, they are working towards a non-android market download in the future.

    any update for this issue?

    • http://alexf.ca/ Alex F

      nothing yet thesniperz.
I’ve been keeping an ear in the forums and such and haven’t seen anything. It will likely wait until Rogers releases an update. Hopefully OTA, and hopefully soon.

Anyone else been experiencing an issue wherein the notification LED will only flash green for pending e-mail notifications, and no others? When I get an SMS, I’d like to have it blink (and all HTC Dream documentation indicates that this should be the case).

    Hello,

There is a new software upgrade released to upgrade the HTC Dream and Magic, it will fix the time stamp issue on text messages and the issue with exchange 2003 not syncing calendar items.

The link below will take you to the Rogers website, you need to select software and HTC in the drop down columns.

It will also be available within the next 48 hours on http://www.htc.com. Be sure to pick Canada as the country and it will also be located under support.

Im having the problem here in Nova Scotia.
I have to set my phone an hour behind so that my texts don't get jumbled.
    Using HTC Magic.
Also…the WiFi connection problem would be something worth tackling as well.

    PLEASE FIX!

    Thanks Rogers.

I have a Magic and I also have the time stamp problem. I have called Rogers about 5 times now about it and they keep pushing me off and I am getting very annoyed at this stage. If it doesn't work, does anyone know if Rogers is in breach of their contract with me…. it is a small problem but really annoying, I signed a contract with them and they aren't offering the service they promised….when I get someone I expect it to work 100%, not 95% and I just have to deal with it.

So I live in Saskatchewan, Regina.

hey, on windows mobile phones, it was simple registry to not trust the operator time to fix sms timestamps, there must be something similar for android phones

On my HTC Dream through Rogers in Victoria I found that the issue is said to be resolved in the latest android os image (ROM) update. Luckily I had just bought my phone so it wasn't a whole lot of work putting my settings and apps back on. The latest release fixed the issue for me.

HTC Dream has the same problem… try the app called Missed Reminder. It can monitor whether you have any SMS/MMS messages waiting and flash the LED red, blue, orange, green or pink. It works for me.

I’ve had the same problem with my original HTC Dream and the one they sent me to replace the “broken” one… for some reason the phone disconnects itself from the network randomly without letting me know, so about 5 or 6 times a day when trying to make a phone call or send a text message it fails and gives me no other explanation than “call/text message could not send” and would not work again until I restarted my phone, which was usually followed by a slew of missed calls and texts from the time my phone decided to be retarded. I will never buy another HTC product as long as I live.
