How To Enable Soft Keyboard On Rogers HTC Dream

by Billy on June 5th, 2009

Many of you out there that have picked up the HTC Dream from Rogers Wireless have noticed one very large and very annoying problem….No Soft Keyboard!!!

For what ever reason, the on-screen (soft) keyboard has been disabled. However, some savvy users have found a method to enable the soft keyboard.

android-artBelow is a brief tutorial on how to Enable the Soft Keyboard on a Rogers Wireless HTC Dream:

Enable the Soft Keyboard on a Rogers Wireless HTC Dream

  1. Download Apps Installer from the Android Market
  2. Go to ‘4shared.com‘ and search for ‘HTC_IME.apk
  3. Download the Android package ‘HTC_IME.apk
  4. Put the .APK package onto your SD card
  5. Install the .APK package with Apps InstallerNote: If you need to remove the .APK package, you can do so under Manage applications. Under Manage, there is ‘Keyboard Calibration’ and ‘Touch Input’. Uninstall ‘Touch Input’ to get rid of the .APK package.
  6. After you install the .APK package with Apps Installer, reboot your HTC device
  7. After reboot, on the HTC Dream device, go to ‘Locale & Text‘ and turn on ‘Touch Input‘. From here you may adjust the settings and try the tutorial.

Note: There are two versions of the .APK Package. The first version is pictured below (regular, unskinned) and the second version (2) is a marble colored version. (Thank you to comments from “s” and “Leslie”.)

  • Hey good article I posted a similar one after following instructions on a forum. http://blog.navetz.com/2009/10/how-to-install-v...

I have liked it so far has anyone come into issues with it?
  • Chris
This worked for me, except in Canada there is no "Apps installer" available, so I used AppManager. Otherwise it worked perfectly :D
  • Installed it 10 minutes ago - works great so far!

The program works really well but is awkward for fatty fingers like mine.
    Thanks for the help!

also found 'anySoftKeyboard' which works and is Very Nice.
no reboot required, tho config a bit finicky.
key spacing and sensitivity was easy to work with.
    check developers website.

I can't figure out how to get it onto my as card?
  • Thanks for the advice and files! Worked like a charm. I too accidentally installed the marble one. Terrible. The clean one that Alex and the others linked to worked perfectly, and look great.
  • use this HTC_IME for a regular keyboard without the fancy marble designs:

  • Hey guys, yeah I found it and posted a similar article. Found the correct file and hosted it on my site.

I finally got the soft keyboard working properly with the plain background. For those who might be struggling... the only thing I'd add is that it seems to be necessary to remove the "marble background" version (or any other that you didn't like) before installing the new version. I used the one found on www.brennanmceachran.com . I'm a happy camper now as I only need to use the hard keyboard for longer messages.
    Thanks all for your help!
  • Glad there is a solution for this problem..

I can extract it from my general wiki if it proves popular.

Thanks Mantafloppy. This zip file works great. Another question if any one knows. When I call my voice mail I need to enter the password. Right now there is no screen keyboard to enter the password and I should use the actual keyboard and it is hard to use when you want to listen to your call at the same time. Any suggestion?

One on listed file share has marbles background... avoid it. Google for alternatives. Brennanmceachran.com has it. This was typed using it... works great. Autocompletion is very nice.
  • THANK YOU!

Haha, it's been bothering me since day one. I've tried both the versions from 4 shared... both seem to be skinned in some way... I'm going to look on google
  • Mantafloppy
The App Installer is call : eoeAppInstaller(???)

(I dont know how the chiness stuff is related)

Both version on 4shared have skin.

    Goggle htc_ime without the .apk,
    or use that one http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/htc_ime.zip
unzip and use usb cable to send on phone sd card.

There are 2 HTC_IME.apk files on the download site. I tried the first without success but just rebooted and will see what happens now.
Got it working but the background is a weird marble effect. I think I may have downloaded that while looking for this keyboard.
  • s
the (2) version has the marble as a skin built-in I guess, I tried it, didn't like it.

the regular htc_ime is (or should be) unskinned. it looks like this: http://www.intogphone.com/haykuro/wp-content/up...

if the one on 4shared does not work, just google "htc_ime.apk", it is a widely available file.
