WIND: Nexus One Works in Canada, We’re in Talks with Google

by Android Fan on January 5th, 2010

There have been a lot of questions today about the announcement of Google’s Nexus One “Superphone”. We quickly discovered that it won’t be available in Canada (boo!) and that it won’t work with other 3G GSM networks, aside from WIND’s AWS.

WIND’s Chris Robbins, their Chief Commercial Officer confirmed via twitter that the Nexus One will work on their AWS 3G spectrum (the same one T-Mobile in the USA uses; this makes the Nexus One incompatible with Rogers, Bell, and Telus), and that they are in talks with “them” (meaning Google) to bring the phone to Canada.

If WIND is able to bring the Nexus One to Canada, that definitely could be the catalyst to jump start their network and build that much needed subscriber base. What do you think? Will WIND bring the Nexus One to Canada?

After Rogers idiotic reluctance to support upgrades on our Android phones, I'm willing to make the jump on WIND. However, I'm on a 3 year contract. Any advice?

  2. rod says:

It's about time we had a carrier in Canada with some brains. Once again wind is showing they are nothing like rogers (or bell, telus for that matter), since they actually care about what customers want, and not what they want to push down the throats of the customers. I can't wait for wind to offer service in my city (and make the nexus one available, however if it doesn't I will just buy it unlocked from google).

I wish WIND all the best of luck to succeed to bring some much needed competition to Canada to make this industry more competitive. Take note that HTC and Rogers have promised to FINALLY upgrade Rogers HTC Magic phones to Android 2.1 in the near future (the Dream will get an UISense upgrade, although 1.5 based due to hardware limitations). Thank you to all those individuals who relentlessly worked to make Rogers and HTC to realize what Canadian want (and deserve): Getting the most recent OS upgrades that your phone's hardware can handle! I sincerely hope this sets a precedent for the future of Canadian Android development.

  4. rod says:

There is *no* hardware difference (internally, that is) between the rogers dream and magic (same amount of ram, rom and cpu). There is a difference between the same devices in the US (the htc dream, aka g1 has only 192MB instead of 256MB of RAM while the rogers htc dream has 256MB just like the magic). So there is no reason they should not support 2.1 on both the rogers dream and the magic.

Screw rogers, they have no concept of customer support, as is evident from their 3+ months of dogging 1.6 upgrades (and even if they do get 2.1 it will probably be another 6 months before it's released).

you guys dont make any sense, the phone is a world phone quad band, so why yall saying it wouldnt work on ROGERS????????????????

  6. KillaBee2k5 says:

Voice would work, it's 3G that wouldn't work on Rogers…and why would you want an Android phone working on Edge?

  7. rod says:

I was wrong about the dream, it only has the same amount of ram as the g1 in the states (192MB), so there is possibly good reason why 2.1 won't work on it.

  8. MinisterPhobia says:

This is awesome! Now, those of us in Vancouver just need to wait for Wind to launch it's service here!

  9. [...] One on the way to Wind Mobile? News broke today from AndroidinCanada.ca that Wind Mobile is in talks with Google to bring the phone to Canada. [...]

  10. David Cooper says:

I just got a google voice account and now realize how game changing google voice and the Nexus One will be. However, I hope that Wind is going to make sure that they are also a recognized carrier to make sure people can take advantage of both. If they do, I'm in.

  11. Aidan says:

I have heard that WIND mobile is the only carrier and I am willing to pay full price for the phone to get it from them, as they do not have annoying contracts but full priced phones, and all i need to know if it will and when it will come to Canada.

  13. barf says:

2.1 *does* work on HTC DREAM — empirical evidence proves it.
    Robbers is just a douche.
