Google Nexus One Not Available in Canada

by Android Fan on January 5th, 2010

So with Google’s Nexus One Press Event, we found out what we already knew in terms of the tech specs and what Engadget told us with their early review of the phone. What we did see was the phone in action and some pretty neat features.

Google Nexus One Not Available in Canada!

If you visit http://www.google.com/phone within Canada, you will see the following message:

“Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country.”

So this means Canada will not get the Nexus One, just yet. Once again, Canadians will have to wait to get the latest technology! This is a Canadian custom if you haven’t realized it by now. On top of that, the network the Nexus One operates on will not be compatible on either the Rogers, Telus, or Bell 3G network. It will only work on WIND (and T-Mobile in the USA), so let’s hope they are the ones to bring it to Canada!

Meant to Post this separately, but mistakenly replied to an earlier string.

The N1 should also work on DAVE and quebecor, as they also own parts of the AWS spectrum. I am personally looking forward to DAVE's launch, as they are purported to have a greater coverage than WIND.

Not true... the Nexus will work on Rogers, Telus or Bell... but not at 3G data speeds, only at EDGE speeds. Just like it will work on AT&T in the US, but only at EDGE speeds. True, for many people (but not all), this will be a big deterrent.

As for the latest technology always showing up later in Canada, the new Sony Experia X10 will debut in N. America on Rogers, and Americans will have to wait.

So what does the phone lack that it cant work with 3G speeds.. What am I looking for in the specs?

Check the specs for this phone on GSM Arena: http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_google_nexus_one-30...

    In particular, note this:
    2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
    3G Network HSDPA 1700 / 2100 / 900

Rogers runs 2G (EDGE) and 3G (HSPA) on 850/1900. So the Nexus will operate at 2G speeds on Rogers.
Telus, Bell operate HSPA only (with no GSM fallback) at 850/1900, so the Nexus will not operate at all on their networks.
WIND Mobile operates on the same frequency as T-Mobile, i.e. AWS or 1700 MHz, so the Nexus WILL operate in 3G on that network, which is fine so long as you stay within WIND's tiny coverage areas.

    Hope that helps.

I think you're only partially correct: the legacy Telus and Bell networks are still CDMA -- the new network is HSPA only -- so the GSM/EDGE support on the Nexus One will do no good on those carriers. You'll only be able to get EDGE on Rogers.

    Here's a pretty decent explanation: http://telushspa.com/telus-hspa-network-faqs

Someone really needs to press Google on whether they have any plans for Nexus One in Canada. An HSPA version for the 850/1900 bands would work on all three major carriers' 3G networks.

yes, I think you're right. There's no GSM fallback on Telus or Bell; they're HSPA only. Good news for Rogers customers, bad news for Telus or Bell customers.

While the device will work for voice calls and texts, data will not. This device will be considered a grey market phone by the listed carriers and users will be charged for every kb of data, plan or not.

The post was more referring that it will not officially be available in Canada. So even if you buy it, the carriers will charge you per kb for data. In other words, it may be a great voice phone but unusable for data.

Horsepucky! I don't think you can make that claim, although of course there are no guarantees. I've long used "grey-market" phones with Fido, and never had an issue with them... all they say is they won't provide any tech support for such phones. I'm currently using an HTC Magic (which Fido doesn't sell), and previously used a Nokia 5800 XM and a Nokia N82, all with data plans.

Nevertheless, it is true that the Nexus will be slow on all networks except WIND. So it's best to wait for the official release in Canada, expected within a couple of months.
