What it is

PressReader had been popular on iOS before arriving on Android. The app is free to install, and you pay for the newspapers. The reviewer liked reading on devices and found the layout of a printed paper something that feeds and social posts could not replace.

Pricing at the time

• Pay per download: $0.99 per edition.
• Unlimited subscription: $30 per month, which the review said was about a dollar more than a single national paper.

These prices are historical and may no longer apply. The reviewer found the unlimited plan not quite worth it personally, but liked the pay-per-download option for papers not carried locally, such as the National Post, Toronto Sun, Toronto Star and Calgary Herald.

How it works

1. Browse the large catalogue of papers.
2. Download one edition, or set a paper to download automatically as new editions arrive.
3. Open the paper from your library and read.

Reading features

• Pan, zoom and fling to switch pages. It can be tricky to tell when you are in zoom mode, because you cannot fling to the next page while zoomed in.
• A page preview mode for jumping between sections.
• Tapping an article title opens a text-only view, which is easier to read but loses the newspaper layout.
• Text-to-speech reads an article aloud, useful for accessibility or a bumpy commute.

There were separate versions for phones and tablets.
