Telus Milestone 2.2 Coming Q1 2011

They call it Droid, we call it Milestone. They get 2.2 in August, we’re told not to hold our breath. Yesterday came news that Canada will in fact be getting 2.2 for the Milestone, just not until sometime next year. Verizon customers in the U.S. got their taste of Froyo this month and while  the European Milestone will be updated before the end of the year, Canadian customers are once again left waiting.

Considering that the Milestone runs a very stock version of Android, one has to ask what the hold up can possibly be. This will very likely be the last major update for the Droid/Milestone, at least officially anyway. But considering the rate of Android updates, next year is a very long time from now.

With 3.0 Gingerbread rumoured to be released around the Holiday season, this means we will likely see Android phones like the Nexus One running 3.0 before we see 2.2 on the Milestone in Canada.

Funny how my just-release-two-weeks-ago HTC Desire already has Froyo…

Mine doesn't… locked to telus and unrooted. I want to keep it “Official” but gawd… telus release 2.2 for my desire already…

it is really sad, but this is the case with all phones here in Canada. The magic, the hero, the desire, the galaxy Spica, and many other phones have received 2.1 updates while in Canada they are still either on the 1.6 or 2.1

that's the only reason that made me wish Google didn't stop selling the Nexus. I agree with Pedram, by the time Canada starts receiving the 2.1 updates, the Nexus will be receiving the 3.0 update.

Talking about the Nexus, I received a hint from a google customer representative regarding the Nexus Two (or the next nexus whichever its name gonna be). That is as I needed to call google regarding my own phone, and while waiting he asked me how I like it and so. The conversation ended up by me saying “it's sad Google is not planing on releasing a successor for the Nexus” and that's when the representative said “well sir, I believe you should keep on visiting the google phone website”. Back then it didn't make sense to me why I should keep on visiting the website, but the elevated rumors about a Nexus two makes it a possibility that google is going to release a Nexus One successor by next year. If that is true, I am expecting the Nexus two will be launched with Android 3.0 and a new ARM chip with 1.3 to 1.5 GHz processor. Still, I really don't know, but I hope my speculations are right.

Well it's still better than the Hero which is still on *$&$&* Android 1.5 with no plan for update when everyone else in the world is 2.0+!!!! Grrrrrr

I'm afraid we going to wait until Q1 2011

  • Raddy

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??????????? Canadian companies charge so much more for their services and we have to wait for the Milestone 2.2? Give me a BREAK.

  • Peejay81

fyi: the telus milestone has already been recovery rooted and runs a version of 2.2 built off the Droid. google is your friend.

Is someone can explain me why the updates are not everywhere like the iPhone?
The phone must be compatible with the frequencies, not the OS so it’s not supposed to be a problem of frequencies!
And who is pushing the update? Google, the manufacturer of the phone or the telephone company?

    • Stan_man_can

It’s the manufacturer. All iPhones are made by Apple, and there’s only ever 2-3 phones they need to prepare the update for.

Since Android is an open system, any company can make and release an Android phone. This means that when Google releases and update, all the manufacturers need to receive it and prepare it for their individual phone models before it can be pushed.

It has nothing to do with Google, and everything with to do with the phone manufacturer. In this case, Motorola.

They are certainly taking their sweet old time. The even bigger issue initially was that they originally announced that Milestones in _Canada_ weren’t going to get the update. At all. A phone not even a year old wouldn’t be receiving updates anymore. That’s terrible at best.

Wow om seriously considering rooting. Hmm does 4zroot work on milestone. 2.1 ?

  • AndroidCat

We’re coming up on the middle of Q1. Tick, tick, tick…

This is the last announcement I’ve seen online about this and it’s almost six months old. With no updates about the status of 2.2 on Milestone from either Telus or Motorola, I’m willing to bet this isn’t going to happen…

I wouldn’t expect much news from Motorola, after all, they’ve already rolled this out to all the Milestones everywhere else. If Telus doesn’t fulfill on this, they’d better not count on my business once the contract is up.

There must be someone we can talk to about this.

  • Kartool

All I know, is this is the last Motorola phone I buy. I can’t install my own version of 2.2 because of the way the phone is locked down, and I don’t get the official 2.2 update until after 2.3 devices are released? Ridiculous.

    • Nossss_42

That’s not true… I’ve got a Telus Milestone that i’ve rooted and been running with 2.2 for nearly 3 months now.
