Telus HTC Hero 2.1 Update Missing

While Motorola Milestone users got their 2.1 update from TELUS back in April and even got a minor update yesterday, HTC Hero users have been left out in the cold with absolutely nothing. The HTC Hero was the first phone to have HTC’s Sense UI and at its time was one of the best smartphones you could get. Sprint customers in the U.S. got their 2.1 update back in May.

Rumours of the Telus 2.1 update have been on-going but no official confirmation has come from either HTC or Telus. Do note that Canadian customers are not the only ones still stuck at 1.5 as it seems only Sprint has been able to get the 2.1 update through along with Taiwan. With Froyo 2.2 already out for some smartphones, this becomes more unacceptable as the days go on.

Discussion growing rapidly on the HTC forums over this topic is showing a lot of frustrated users. Users do have the option to root their phone and try updating through unofficial ROMs but is it really fair to be forced to do that as a regular consumer?

I’ve pinged Telus on behalf of the site and will surely let you know if anything develops on this story. I know there’s a lot of Hero users out there. Have you guys caved and rooted your phones? Anyone heard anything from Telus regarding this?

[Thanks, Chris]

Glad I didn't buy this, I almost did. What I want to know from Telus, is why I can't log in to my online account any longer after their website update! Ping me back on that! :D

You should definitely contact them about that one. Wonder if anyone else out there is having issues

I had the online account issue today as well. I'm strongly considering rooting my HTC Hero if this update doesn't come through this month. Either that or I'll get a Nexus One via the Android Developer's Network and be done with it….

Rooting your Hero isn't a terrible idea if you're willing to try that sort of thing. I have my Nexus One rooted and it gives me lots of extra apps and functionality. You're part of the developer network?

The fragmentation of the android updates is a huge problem. iPhone users can get their firmware updates as soon as apple releases them, ditto with blackberry. (and i understand what they can do that) But android users like us have to wait months and months to get our firmware updates. (with the vast majority still waiting at 1.5) I'm considering if I should even buy another android device when my contract is up. Android so far has been quite a let down for me.

I got impatient and ended up buying a Nexus one. Within 20 mins of turning it on I was offered to upgrade to 2.2. It's pretty cool, but I do miss some of the Sense features, such as the enhenced keyboard. So thank you Telus for supporting day 1 (of the new network) customers…

Did you use a username or email address to login? They recently “upgraded” their online service and you now have to login with your email. But you need to migrate from a computer, as I tried from myy phone and wasn't able to complete the task…

Do remember that Apple no longer updates their original iPhone and RIM's OS 6 has only been announced to be releasing on 3 of their latest phones. I completely understand your frustration and I think the blame falls on everyone including the carriers and manufacturers. Google also left Android open to custom skins and such which slow down these updates even more. Also keep in mind that tech savvy people like us take this very seriously whereas the average consumer probably doesn't even know what firmware they're using (I once asked a friend and he said he doesn't read the phone's manual like I do.)

It's the main reason i love my Nexus One, it wasn't that big of a concern when i bought the phone though. When it was released, it was the best phone I could get in Canada (I sold my iPhone 3GS for it.) I've loved it ever since my purchase

I've been doing numerous this to get my phone off a rom that is lacking support and abilities, to a point where I have been unable to update apps, or install others, to compatibility issues with apps. I got VillainRom's SuperHero rom on my phone now…and I won't be turning back, it's the best way to go unless you get something like a Nexus. Carriers shouldn't lock the phone os's down. Anyone smart enough to root, can, and anyone not smart enough, won't.

Thank you Pedram for looking into this issue for myself and other Hero users. As you can see the conversation has been lengthy and all but abandoned the notion we'd get an official release. Hopefully you have better luck with your Telus contacts than we measly customers did.

BTW, I thought that most European carriers with HTC Heros got their update too?

You’re very welcome. Are you Chris that tipped us about it?

I believe SOME european countries have received 2.1 by now but the majority got a minor update. Here is what I went by: http://goo.gl/gooz

Called Telus the other day and spent 45 minutes bitching how I feel as though I'm being treated “unfair” and the customer relations MANAGER told me, and I quote, “suck it up, buttercup.”

I was pretty pissed off… I have to stay with Telus because the contract will ruin me, but fuck them if they think I'm geiving them money for a new phone…

I'm glad that works out for you. I was hoping someone would share their favourite custom ROM since I don't own a Hero and wouldn't know which to recommend. Thanks!

Wow. that's pretty absurd. You could try complaining to head office if you remember her name. I know for a fact Rogers simply does not like it when you call them. Have you thought about transferring your contract over to someone? It's a great alternative to paying an Early Termination Fee, try Craigslist.

  • http://twitter.com/OfftheDial Off the Dial

    Yup, that's me.

  • PEDRAM13

Awesome! Thanks again for the tip. There's so many Android phones around that it's really hard to keep track on our end. We need more readers sharing like you to help

Holy fuck, they actually said that. Fuck Telus, I want my god dam update.

This is completely asinine, we should not have to wait this long for an update released half a year ago. I am absolutely sick of waiting, there are actual apps that I have tried using from the market that tell me I need 2.0 or HIGHER to run the app. I am still on the 1.5 from Telus and I got my hero back at the beginning of January. I've been waiting for an update for 6 months. Telus and HTC seem to know nothing about a release date or if there is even going to be a update when I contacted them. HTC did tell me to use the SPRINT 2.1 software update, but I do not know if this is branded for sprint phones, because their hero version and software looks a little different as depicted by HTC's site. I have switched from Rogers to Telus, and I am disgusted at both the service and treatment they give customers.

  • Waiting

They used to have “coming soon” hidden on the page, but removed it when it was noticed by the public. That either means it's immanent and “coming soon” is ridiculous to have, OR it's NOT coming soon at all! :(

All I can say is my next phone will NOT be a telus one based on this single experience of endless waiting.

  • BalooQc

I shouldn't say it, but it's still there on the french page. Let's see how long they'll keep it there…

I think Telus needs to be more responsive! After locking us in to a multi-year contract, Telus now sticks its head in the sand and pretends the HTC Hero doesn’t even exist. Maybe a class action lawsuit would get us some answers.
