Rogers Launches Android-powered LG Loop; OS 2.1 Approved For Magic+

LG Loop

The latest Android device to hit Rogers is the LG Loop, otherwise known as the GT540. This low cost Android device comes preloaded with OS 1.6, but will be upgraded to OS 2.1.

The Loop features a 3-inch touchscreen display, 3-megapixel camera with video, GPS, WiFi, and supports up to 32GB of storage with a microSD card. As an extra, Rogers includes a 2GB card in the box.

The Loop is available for $29.99 on a 3-year agreement. The device is also available for $199.99 on a 2-year agreement.

OS 2.1 On Magic+

In other news, users of the HTC Magic+ from Rogers have been waiting for the OS 2.1 upgrade. This week, Rogers has completed their internal testing of OS 2.1 and is now waiting on Google and HTC to begin the roll out.

There is no time frame for when the roll out will begin,  but hopefully it happens by the end of August 2010. Rogers was unable to provide additional comment.

Once the update goes live, OS 2.1 for Magic+ will be the first OTA (over-the-air) update for a Rogers Android device. Rogers has ensured that the OTA update will not use customer data plans and all downloads will be $0-rated.

To prepare your Magic+ for the OTA 2.1 update, the device must have Android 1.5 with SenseUI installed. If your device does not have OS 1.5, you can upgrade directly to OS 2.1 by visiting a Rogers location (details coming soon) or presumably online.

Let's hope Google doesn't drag their feet.

I assume we don't have to worry about the OTA update if we've rooted and are running a custom ROM…

Finally we get an update over the air.. and then they tell us it is going to be the last one. Might as well root the phone now.

Well that's half way wonderful news! I just hope Rogers doesn't put all the blame on HTC and Google if we have to wait another 6 months… perish the thought.
I'm so sick of finding more and more apps that “can't be installed on this phone”.

    exactly

  • Vetteman72

But that's the “positive user experience” that Rogers was so certain we would enjoy with our original android dream and magic phones at 1.5 :-)

I sure hope not. Been running 2.2 for a month now on my Magic and I'm loving every bit of it.

    LOL, Good one Vetteman72

i think it's crazy that the samsung galaxy spica FINALLY got an official upgrade to 2.1 from samsung and it's like either no one knows or cares. i guess i knew it was possible i was one of the few who got that phone, but i didn't realize that there were so few that it wouldn't be newsworthy.

curiously, rogers removed the spica from their site a short time before the update was released. i think it's weird.

honestly i wish i could put the blame solely on rogers but htc hasn’t updated shit in the states or Europe for our phone either man. (i know nothing of google’s support so i wont comment).

Any news on this… has anyone received the update yet? It is September now after all….

how did you root your rogers phone? got a link??

I was so happy to find a message on my Rogers Magic phone offering me the upgrade to 2.1! However, when the download started it said there wasn’t enough storage space, on my SD card I presumed. I cleared lots of space and clicked on the original message, and the one announcing the download failure. Both just disappeared and the download didn’t resume.
I guess I have to visit a Rogers store now and see what they can do for me.
