Poll: Who Is Your Carrier? (update: added Fido)

Plain and simple. Which wireless service provider do you use?

As you may know, I have a Google Nexus One and Rogers is my carrier. Why Rogers? Because Rogers has a standard GSM network with both a 2G (EDGE) and a 3G infrastructure. This means, if your 3G connection drops, you’ll automatically fall onto the 2G network and still be able to make calls and have internet access. Now I live in Vancouver and my 3G is very solid but those times where 2G saves me, I am a happy Rogers customer.

I also should say that I have 2 years remaining on the contract I signed to get a discounted iPhone 3GS about a year ago. Lastly, I’m under a Corporate Business Plan that gets me about everything I need for about $80/month, pretty good deal.

Rogers doesn’t have the best selection of Android handsets compared to the competition but hopefully this will change as time goes on. So I ask you again, who’s your carrier? Specific reason you’re with them? Are you just tied into a contract? Phone selection? Everyone has a story, Share yours below!

I'm with fido (which is owned by Rogers). I had my number with fido since 2003 and every time I see a better plan at another carrier fido customer relations gives me a better one. I don't like fido just because their phones stinks. They don't have any smart phone except the iPhone and the Blackberry 8520. That is why I wanted to move to Rogers 2 years ago but they gave me a better deal.

This year my contract is expiring, and I was about to go to Telus because I think the Desire is the best bang for the buck (80 dollars and you get a Nexus one little brother). For me I wasn't planing on using the phone for long since I already have a nexus one. I just wanted to try it for a bit and then sell it on ebay or craigslist. But again, fido gave me this ultimate deal (that I don't think can be beaten by any company). I will sign a 3 year contract, get the iPhone 4, which I'm gonna sell right away coz I prefer to have a phone rather than a toy, especially that I don't have a land line but only my cell phone. As well, I think the Nexus with 2.2 is the best device out there even with the galaxy S and the desire rolling out, they still run the 2.1 and only God knows when Telus or Bell gonna release the 2.2 updates. but here is why I decided to remain with fido:
    - Voice plan: unlimited incoming calls, 200 minutes in the morning, Unlimited minutes in evening and weekends ($25)
    - 6 Gb of data ($30 with the contract)
    - 2500 SMS and 100 MMS (free)
    - 100 extra minutes during the day (free)
    - Voice mail, caller ID, who called and all of that bundle (free)
    - Early evenings at 5:00 PM (free)

So that's it, for 55+tax (around 63 total), I get all the goodies. I was actually negotiating my plan to a degree the customer relations representative told me that fido is reimbursing me more than my voice plan so they cannot give me anymore. I think if you have been with a company for long you should always try to negotiate a plan. coz it works.

Signed a contract with Telus for the HTC Hero and because of the lack of knowledge over at Telus, I recently got a Galaxy S through Bell and unlocked it myself — much happier Telus customer now.

Not too bad! I had a Retentions offer through Rogers, but sold it with my iphone 3g on Kijiji. It was(If I remember correctly)

    250 Weekday Minutes
    500 MB Data
    Unlimited Texts, Pictures, Video
    Caller ID & Voicemail(Free)
100 Canada Wide Long Distance Minutes
    Early Evenings from 6 pm

After taxes I believe it was 42.66 or something like that..

I am with rogers and sadly i couldn't be more unhappy. i must say that their customer service representatives are great, but drop calls, texting issues and other phone problems for over 6 months with no resolve has left me sour. i am considering Jumping to telus or bell. Besides both telus and bell have acceptable android phones, Desire and galaxy S vibrant. where rogers seems to be rummaging threw the garbage other guys. taking what ever crap they can get there hands on. Sony x10 is a decent phone. still not to be your flag ship phone for your company. I do realize samsung galaxy vibrant is coming to rogers next month. but its still the lower end of the samsung line.

I’ve been with bell for what weems to be ever. They keep surprising me with a new handset that I cant seem to pass up on.
I was with Telus for eons since they were Clearnet. When I wanted the Palm Treo, and Telus did not carry it I jumped ship to Bell (only to learn later that could have got me one, sigh) After that Bell kept on with good surprises, one after the other. Most recently the Touch PRo, followed by the Iphone 3GS. Just sole that to help me finance my new love, the Galaxy S Vibrant. I’m locked into a 3 year that occurred when I got the iPhone and signed for a new plan that locked me in until 2012. I’m now an Android Junkie and loving it. Screw You Jobs and your ridiculous iTunes!!!!

Well thank you for the information!

I think Fido/Rogers still have the best network and roaming reliability. I traveled a lot in the past 10 years and never I was without services (even on small islands in the Caribbean). I was on Lac Champlain this summer with some friends and one of them with Bell didn’t have any roaming service… I also like the “billing by the secconds”. So I was worried switching network because I wanted a new phone.

So I bought a Desire at Telus, unlocked it and add a 1G option to my existing Fido plan (without contract). I did that to be sure I can use the phone normally on the network. Now I’m looking for a better deal since they do not subsidize anything for me they are doing a pretty good deal with me. So I will torture them with something like yours.

So thanks again for sharing your experience.

Happy Rogers customer here. I have been with fido (before they were bought by rogers), Bell, and finally Rogers. Out of all the carriers, I’d have to say that Rogers has treated me the best. No matter what phone I had. But now I”m sick and tired of the iphone bs. So I’m going to get the Captivate the moment it’s available !!! And man I can’t wait!

Unsatisfied Rogers customer. Was part of the whole android dream/magic/e911/forced upgrade/dream to magic swap/waiting for 2.1 fiasco.

Locked in till Dec 2011. i am getting dinged every month for overages and was surprised to hear the CSR tell me that i should stick with the plan i have because all their newer plans suck balls and id be worse off. that tells you something when the CSR says not to switch. and $30/mth for 500 MB and im supposed to be grateful? I could unlimited on WIND mobile for $35!!!

Android phone selections are not good on it either, but no longer an issue. i learned my lesson. Will buy whichever droid i like from which ever carrier at full price and unlock the damn thing. Perhaps even get a US version of a phone that will get the OTA updates straight from google with no Carrier crap getting in the way of updates like the Nexus 1.

Painful learning experience. Still waiting for 2.1 on my Magic….. and waiting… and waiting….

I just upgraded from 500 MB data plan for $25/month to 6 GB for $30 with Rogers. It’s a special they have on right now.

I bought my first Smartphone, the HTC Android Dream, from Rogers on the day it was released, June 2, 2009. There was no other carrier with Android phones at the time and I’ve been happy enough with Rogers. I pay about $70 a month which includes 150 minutes, 1000 messages and 6 GB. I don’t have any calling features because I don’t use it as a phone very often – maybe one call in 2 weeks.

I’m still stuck on Cupcake and really wondering what the delay is all about! It seems to have taken Rogers 2 months to “test” the 2.1 update, which is kind of ridiculous since it comes directly from HTC! I’d like to upgrade to a newer phone, especially to get the 1 GHz CPU but I’m not going to move until I can find one at a decent price. Since I’m on a 3 year contract that won’t be too soon I’m afraid, but I keep hoping Rogers will offer me a deal I can’t refuse – like the one in January 2010 that gave me a brand new HTC Magic replacement for my HTC Dream. I even got to keep the Dream, which Best Buy bought back from me for almost $100!

My rogers contract is up next month I currently have a BB. I want to move to Android. I also want a lot of daytime minutes so I am thinking about Wind, however, their only Android phone is an entry level Huawei. I am not super demanding on my phone and am wondering if both Wind and this model of phone will suffice.

    Any comments? Thanks

  • Mo

    Hey Muary,
I’m not sure if you are aware, but wind uses the 1700 and 2100 Mhz frequencies. If you want to go with wind (you like one of their plans), go for it and buy yourself a phone from ebay or kijiji. you’ll find a lot of amazing phones (android phones) from T-Mobile in the US and they are (in almost all cases) easily unlockable. there is the nexus one, Galaxy Vibrant, that are going for around 400 on ebay. or if you want something cheaper you can find stuff like the Magic, or motorola Cliq XT or Cliq (or one of these guys).

I honestly think a company’s cell phone is not as important as a company’s plan or service as long as it’s a GSM company. Just swipe sim cards and you’re good.

my contract ends with rogers in a month, and i’m not too certain about which phone, or even which carrier to go with. i don’t kid myself; i’m not a techie. that being said, i want an android phone simply because its not a iphone, and it has google maps, gps, etc (basically the stuff that i want). unfortunately, my sister wants an iphone, and so that probably means we’ll have to stick with rogers, since my dad will want to get a family plan. i reaaaally want the google nexus one, but it doesnt seem like rogers carries it. so i’m thinking that i’ll go with my sister, get the iphone 4g and buy a google nexus one off ebay or kiijiijii or whatever. good plan???? please help!
