Why does Google not offer the official ROMs (1.6, 2.0 etc )for download as they release them, independent of the carrier or manufacturers? I have not heard any discussion on that front and I have been reading many forums on this subject.

As others have said, a solution to the lack of updates from Rogers is to root the phone and install a customer ROM. If you are uncomfortable trying to do this yourself, I am offering the service to root + flash the new ROM for a small fee. I have been running Cyanogenmod since the Dream was released here without any issues, you get all the updated goodness.

Does anyone know why google maps isn't available on the market anymore? Has this to do with the fact that we are running on 1.5?
