When Will Google TV Come to Canada?

Your guess is as good as mine. The Google TV announcement was pretty interesting. However, once again Canadians will be forced to wait for Google TV in Canada. The USA will get Google TV in the Fall, but for people in Canada we will have to wait yet again.

What exactly is Google TV? Take a look at the description from the Google Blog:

Google TV is a new experience for television that combines the TV that you already know with the freedom and power of the Internet. With Google Chrome built in, you can access all of your favorite websites and easily move between television and the web. This opens up your TV from a few hundred channels to millions of channels of entertainment across TV and the web. Your television is also no longer confined to showing just video. With the entire Internet in your living room, your TV becomes more than a TV — it can be a photo slideshow viewer, a gaming console, a music player and much more.

Google TV uses search to give you an easy and fast way to navigate to television channels, websites, apps, shows and movies. For example, already know the channel or program you want to watch? Just type in the name and you’re there. Want to check out that funny YouTube video on your 48” flat screen? It’s just a quick search away. If you know what you want to watch, but you’re not sure where to find it, just type in what you’re looking for and Google TV will help you find it on the web or on one of your many TV channels. If you’d rather browse than search, you can use your standard program guide, your DVR or the Google TV home screen, which provides quick access to all of your favorite entertainment so you’re always within reach of the content you love most.

It seems that Google is trying their take on the Apple TV but upping the ante. I think it’s a great idea to get consumers to have the internet on their TVs. I’m surprised the adoption has been so slow. Now that Google is stepping in and working with major TV manufacturers like Sony, it’ll be interesting to see how many people jump onto the new concept. Running Android OS is a major bonus as that will result in lots of customization and you know it’ll be an easy to use optimized interface.

Alas, Canadians will have to continue to stick to our old habit of waiting for the latest technology in Canada. You could always buy from the US and bring it back home too right?

The last thing I want is to buy a tv. However what I do want and is how I understand it is that devices running android will connect to the tv. A media centre running android makes a lot of sense. Add tuners and inputs for your STB and other sources might replace my pc based HTPC. It will be a lot easier to customize your sources such as RSS/podcast feeds with android.
Of course expect the providers to keep this out of canada for as long as possible, they want you to buy their crappy PVRs. No thanks, I'll mix and match many content sources instead of crippled crapware that is the norm.

So don't wait for official products in Canada, watch for downloadable versions to build your own.

Okay….. I see this being very worthwhile for Americans, because they can stream tv show and sports from site such as, Hulu, CBS, ESPN and others for free. Here in Canada, we can’t stream these sites because of restrictions from our ISP’s. Worthless!

I have my desktop hooked up to the big screen tv. How is this different? Do we still have to search sites for the show and then try and get it to work thru movieshare or divx player or what. If we still have to do that, I already have it and you’d be a fool to pay 400.00 to get THAT, it sucks.
