When Will Android Come to Rogers/Fido and Canada?

by Android Fan on March 20th, 2009

Google’s Android OS currently is on handsets in the United States. Many people are asking: “When will Rogers carry Android phones?” The answer to that is…we don’t know.

Rogers is not the fastest company when it comes to getting the latest cellphones. Just think of the iPhone 3G. It took quite a while before Canadians were told that the company would even carry the phone. Right now, your choices for a GSM Android phone lies within Rogers/Fido.

Android Handsets Coming in 2009–Will We See These in Canada?

The following companies will be making Android handsets and releasing them in 2009: HTC, Samsung, Garmin, and Sony Ericsson. This has been confirmed by various sources. One huge Android phone many people are anticipating is the HTC Magic (formerly HTC Dream). Check out the video:

Will we ever get an Android phone in Canada? Can the Canadian mobile market support so many smartphones? We have Blackberries, iPhones, Nokias, and now Android devices. Would you buy an Android phone? When do you predict seeing Android devices on our shores?

  • Unbelievable, the timing of this Rogers announcement! Right after Bell announced the Pre yesterday. New post on the main page!
  • Hilarious that I posted that today. Rogers put up a countdown today for the HTC devices!

  • I definitely need a smart phone, and don't really want a Blackberry, not sure I want to jump into an iPhone, and have been really anxious to see an Android phone since they came out. I think it's crap that it takes so long for us in Canada to get the newer technologies.

As Blob mentioned, Telus and Bell are currently moving to a GSM network, so they may be looking at carrying these, but the reps I've talked to through my work seem to not even have a clue what Android is. Really out of touch with things.

I hope they announce something soon. I need something before the end of the year, and would hate to jump into a contract then have an Android device come out a month later. A little notice would be nice.

If you follow the news, you would have known that Bell and TELUS are currently setting up a GSM network. The Android phones will probably be here by the end of the year.

The situation is a little different than the iPhone. The iPhone was more or less a clash of wills... Apple wanted to dictate the pipe that Rogers owned. Suffice to say, Apple didn't hold out for long...

As far as I understand it, it's more of a bizarre lack of interest that has kept Rogers from pulling the HTC Dream into canada. That might change with more Android phones coming out, but considering that Rogers is the only GSM network in town... that might take a while.

Really the CTRC really needs to look into opening up the GSM networks here. That of Bell or Telus need to swtich networks.
  • I live in Canada and I am really hoping to be able to get the HTC Magic. I definitely want to get an Android phone, just don't have any options yet.

If someone sells an unlocked HTC Magic, is it possible to get this working in Canada with a Rogers sim card?
