Update: Rogers HTC Dream/Magic Android Timestamp Problem

by Billy on August 24th, 2009

It has been a few months since we last reported about the timestamp problem with the HTC Dream/Magic running Google’s Android. Well your patience has paid off as one AndroidInCanada reader seems to have located a fix!*

Timestamp Pains

If you head over to the Rogers Support Download Center, there is a software download that applies a fix for the text messaging time stamp issue, enables Chinese character display for POP3 HTML emails and corrects ActiveSync calendar issues with Exchange 2003/2007.

Once you are at the Rogers Support site, follow the instructions below:

  1. Select “Software” in the drop-down menu
  2. Then select “HTC” from the drop-menu on the right side
  3. Choose to download for either the HTC Dream or HTC Magic
  4. Back up your device before install

The software download should also be available shortly on the HTC Canada Support page.

Before You Begin

There are some things to note however before applying this software:

  • The software performs a full wipe
  • You will lose Root access to your device (if you do not do this, it won’t make a difference to you)
  • The software restores the Rogers shortcuts to default

If anyone has or is planning on downloading and installing the software, let us know about your experience in the comments below.

*Thanks to AndroidInCanada reader Evan B. for the heads-up!

  • nice help from Rogers.
  • Pissed off Rogers customer
Got a mac, Rogers said they would send to pre-loaded SD cards with the update to me home...they said it would take 2 days max...incidentally that involved 30 minute(twice) wait times with tech support...first guy messed up, turns out the second guy did too...as they have no record of it being sent four days later. Rogers suck, HTC does not. So no phone internet access and texts/robot voicemails telling me from Rogers a couple of times a day to update my phone...what a bunch of clowns
  • staceyhicks
Did the update and it has been 24 hours and still no service yet.
  • billy416
try powering off your device and then power it back up. that worked for me.
  • Vitaly
It is unbelievably slow, could not finish in 48 minutes - failed on 86%
  • cusio456
i used to love my HTC dream, but now with all the problems im having with it i cant stand it anymore!

seems like a simple thing but!! trying to do 2 way sync with google calendar but only syncs info on pc to phone and not vice versa. Suggestions?
  • billy416
I figured out a few of the issues I originally had. I couldn't get the update to load on to my phone as I was using front USB ports and not those on the back of my PC. As far as the problem with Microsoft Exchange, Rogers never bothered to tell me that they don't support it.

The solution was to create a POP account and have my work account forward to it.
  • man of men
the update fixed several of my problems, i kept losing random contacts , my battery was dieing way to fast and i had poor reception, after the update everything was fixed and my contacts all re appeared. it did un-root my phone but it doesent matter cause its a phone not a computer
  • kraneous
So now about a week after updating my rom file like this my phone is acting really weird. My sms randomly closes and gives me an error which says that com.android.sms or whatever has stopped and has to close. has anyone else had this problem???
sometimes i get com.android.phone stopps working and i lose cell phone signal while it resets..are these problems related to the update?
  • timino
I think this update prevents you from being able to do rooting in the future. I have not been able to root my phone or flash it.
  • oswinwong
    I need help.

I have an HTC Dream and I also have the same timestamp problem.

I see the download but my computer is a Mac. What should I do?
  • ERae
same MAC problem here, timestamp issue has been annoying and even smsfixtimes has stopped working for me. anyone who has figured out update for mac users, please post.
  • oswinwong
i really need help...so i have this problem on my Dream...but my computer is a Mac ... what should i do?
  • billy416
then what did i do wrong? there was no status activity on either the phone or the PC. I managed to get the phone working by removing the battery and nothing had changed.
  • kraneous
just did this to my phone, worked GREAT!! I dont like how it wipes your phone but i backed up everything using the htc sync software which i downloaded on the same page as the ruu files and it worked fine...just give your phone enough time to sync everything before you start freaking out that your contacts aren't there. anything that you saved on your SD card will remain unchanged so any music/pics are safe.

I recommend following the instructions EXACTLY as they are written and you should have no problems.
  • thesniperz
What backup app did you guys use?
    any suggestions?
I just tried "MyBackup" by rerware and it didnt fully backup all my contacts. it only backed up contacts on my Gmail...

so i had to add them again on my fone..
    Upgrade ran perfectly though..
  • billy416
not happy with this process at all. followed the instructions, waited much longer than 10 minutes to get a notice saying the update was not successful. all other prompts were useless. unplugged my phone and it remains on the same screen. can't even turn it off.

pretty pissed off at this point.
  • thesniperz
yeah.. i hope the next update (probably Donut) will be OTA and wont affect apps installed, contacts, and other things on your phone..
  • theeresa
Anyone had problems sending photos via texts since the update? Mine has that 'clock' next to it forever then eventually shows the error sign and never sends the text. Grrrrrrrr
  • Kennie
Looks like Layar is back on android market.
  • darron
Me too, i updated and now i cant find layar and ebuddy.
  • Kennie
I went to getjar.com and found ebuddy.
  • CHRISVILLANI
I have the same problem Layar is definetly gone, also i cant seem to find AndroZip!
  • Jenn
    Hi
    I've updated my Rogers Magic.
And now I cant find Layar in the Market.
    Anyone having the same problem?
  • rod
I haven't applied the upgrade yet I can still see layar in the market, so it sounds like the upgrade has indeed caused layar (and possibly others too?) to be removed/hidden from the market.
  • rod
I know that layar is a 'protected' app (one that can't be simply copied without having root access). Perhaps it's a protected app issue? Anyone else with apps that are protected and no longer shown in the market?
  • darron
Yea the app eBuddy was a protected app but its not shown in the market after the update. I tried to reset my phone but its still not working.
  • Kennie
    Same here. Layar is gone.
  • theeresa
Looks gooood, I'm happy with it!

This is the 'read me' that comes with it:

    Getting Started

Before you run the ROM Update Utility (RUU), make sure you have done the following:
    • The correct PC driver for your Android phone has been installed.
    • The Android phone is connected to your PC using the USB cable. The PC must recognize the Android phone.
    • Standby or hibernation mode of your PC has been disabled.
    • Close all running applications on the PC.
    • The Android phone screen lock has been disabled.

Important Do not interact with your Android phone unless the RUU wizard instructs you to do so.

General Procedure on Installing the ROM Update Utility (RUU)

    1. Installing the ROM Update Utility (RUU) will delete ALL information and data on your Android phone. We recommend that you back up your personal data from the Android phone to your PC by using PC Sync Tools.
    2. On your PC, run the ROM Update Utility (RUU) to install the ROM update to your Android phone. (The next section will provide you a detailed procedure on how to install the ROM Update).
    3. Restore your data back to your Android Phone using PC Sync Tools.
  • warwolf
Heard it would wipe and unroot phone but thought why not.. anyways i rooted my phone a few weeks ago and not sure if thats why but when i run this program it doesnt recognize my phone is it because i rooted or am i doing something wrong
  • lucashokanson
It installs a perfect SPL so beware!
  • darron
    whats an SPL?
  • lucashokanson
Seccondary Programming Language. more or less the bootloader you only need to be concerned if you want to root or put a different rom on

search hear for more info: http://androidcommunity.com/forums/
  • theeresa
Rogers told me to download it from my phone, but that doesn't work so I'll try tonight using my computer. I'm stoked about the fix I was hounded them since I got it! I'll let you know how it goes :)
  • CHRISVILLANI
I did it it worked flawlessly, HTC created a nice little utitlity to update the ROM which is pretty nice
  • rod
More than likely this fixes several bugs, including the kernel exploit that allows root access. *sigh* it requires a windows pc (it's delivered as an exe), do they still assume everyone runs windows? Gonna root my phone with the 1 click hack while I still can...
  • ooooohhhhh. wipes the phone, I'm going to let someone else do it first.
  • Downloading and installing now, only problem is the dream has huge connectivity problems with pc's. HTC directly told me it will not sync with Outlook with the Rogers software on it.
  • Ken
I could not syn with MS Outlook either and the connectivity is a MEGA problem which makes a smart phone pretty dumb! I hope there is a fix coming soon. Still keeping my Blackberry.
  • billy416
has this been resolved? one of the major problems i am having (without the update) is using exchange to access my work account.
