Update: Rogers HTC Dream/Magic Android Software Update Kills Some Apps

by Billy on August 30th, 2009

Last week we indicated available software that Rogers (and HTC) had released which applied a fix for the text messaging time stamp issue, enabled Chinese character display for POP3 HTML emails and corrected ActiveSync calendar issues with Exchange 2003/2007.

Many HTC Dream/Magic users have since downloaded and installed the software without any issues until they attempted to re-download some of their most commonly used Android applications. The problem is, those apps could no longer be found on the Android Marketplace!

Below is a list of some of the apps that seem to disappear from the Android Marketplace as a result of the update:

  • AndroZip
  • EBuddy
  • Layar
  • Twidgit

At this time, it is unknown if this problem is caused by downloading the software from Rogers directly, from HTC directly or if there is simply some incompatibility in the software, but in either case, make sure you make a note about this. The last thing that you want is to update your HTC device and then lose some of your most used applications.

Actually, it looks like quite a few apps disappear from the Marketplace. Many of the streaming radio apps are now missing. Perhaps some of the listed apps don't support this "new" kernel version?
