Telus Releases HTC Desire For $79.99

On Friday, Telus officially released the anticipated Android-powered HTC Desire.

The device has launched at $79.99 on a 3-year voice and data agreement and will ship with Android OS 2.1. However, the Desire will be upgradable to Android OS 2.2 as per an HTC representative report in July 2010.

Aside from OS 2.1, the HTC Desire features a 3.7-inch touchscreen display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, integrated WiFi, a 5-megapixel camera, and 8GB microSD card included in the box.

For those that don’t like the 3-year agreement, the device is also available at the following price points:

  • 2-year agreement: $349.99
  • 1-year agreement: $399.99
  • No agreement: $449.99

Check it out at Telus!

unfortunately, likely not available in Manitoba, where I live. However, MTS just released the HTC ADR6250 (aka “Hero”). Pricing similar. How do the two phones compare?

  • guest

@Ted, they don't compare at all: the Hero has a slower processor, smaller screen, worse battery life…

It's still a good phone, I own one. I am however upgrading to this beautiful monster the Desire as soon as I can, because while the Hero is an okay phone, like I already said, it does not compare at ALL to this phone.

I was looking forward to the iPhone for so long, but after witnessing the kinds of folks dedicating days of their little lives waiting, and waiting (and waiting) in line for that phone, I couldn't handle it anymore. I did a bunch of research and talked to some friends who I noticed had an Android device (upon learning how to recognize one). So on Friday, I picked up the HTC Desire. I love it. It's awesome. Too bad the 32GB SD cards for it are so expensive (close to $200) and/or unavailable. Other than that, it's got features upon features. I turned off data when not using it, put it in airplane mode as I went to bed last night, and right now I have 35% battery life remaining at 27 hours since unplugging the device. No regrets here and those Iphone losers can eat their overpriced phones…

Yeah, what's up with Manitoba not gettin' any Telus, Bell or Virgin Mobile love? All those carriers are slowly catching up and surpassing Rogers' line of phones.

Some network issues of non-existance or something? Feelin' kind of left out here.

You made my day! I've pretty much made up my mind too. I currently have an iPhone 3G – I don't want an iPhone 4 for several reasons – so right now I'm waiting for either a Samsung to fix the GPS issue on the captivate or for HTC to release something BIG in canada…Desire HD I'm looking at you!

  • Alex

I've been eying the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S Captivate release on Rogers, but the more I read about the GPS issue (and Samsung barely acknowledging it, yet alone appearing to be working to fix it) the more the HTC Desire looks like the better choice.

  • Alex

What extra (if any) stuff did Telus add to the phone? Can you side-load apps? I'm curious how locked-down it comes out of the box.

  • win7heartsandroid

Yeah…either Samsung just does no care or it's actually a hardware issue. The Desire has: better UI, LED flash and working GPS. The Captivate however has the better screen and processor (benchmark results) – which is useless if you need GPS. Finally the Samsung is supposed to have several other little issues like random hickups throughout the UI, overheating, pathetic battery life. That's just what I've been reading on forums. I think im gonna get this and unlock it so I can use it on Rogers

So far I haven't figured out what side-loading is letalone how to do it. I have not noticed any Telus “branding” whatsoever on the phone, however, I cannot find Skype in the Market, and the Skype website says that my device is not supported. I called Telus and they said that they do not block any applications. That said, I can't trust those guys either…so if there is any way you can help me “side-load” Skype just to see, please let me know. Thanks!

Sorry I don't have an Android device yet so I do not know how side loading works. However side loading is a method to load unapproved – apps that are not on the android market – on your phone.
There is no Telus logo when you turn the phone on either?

    Thanks

Nope, just turned off and on, no telus anything. Now, I got mine on launch day so maybe the branding comes later!

too bad the telus version went with the LCD display rather than the AMOLED it was originally designed with. I'm still buying one but I sure wish they hadn't cheaped out

Exactly!! I'd have bought a Desire in a second with the Amoled screen..I saw these in the store yesterday and next to the Samsung with the GPS issues, the screen on Desire looked DULL.

Desire HD would be great and the sooner the better…however I need a new phone NOW. These dribs and drabs of second best phones at a time are so frustrating!
