Telus HTC Hero 2.1 Update Appears, Then Disappears?

Very interesting. We got tipped at about 9:34AM PDT this morning about an Android 2.1 update link for the HTC Hero on the Telus website. I got around to my email at around 1PM PDT and surely enough, saw this little info box dated September 16th about the 2.1 update. However when I clicked the link, I would be taken to the downloads section and no such update was available for download.

But here’s where it gets really interesting, once I went back to that original page to take a screenshot, the info box was gone and now there is no sign that this update ever existed (I checked every province page.)

So what does this all mean? Well for starters, your update is coming and it’s probably coming soon. Maybe Telus put it out before they were ready? Now I’m not sure if the actual download file ever existed on the site for download but they were definitely getting ready for it. We know you’ve been patiently waiting forever now. You can be sure i’m bookmarking that page but if you happen to see anything (or maybe even saw or better yet GOT the update?!) you’re gonna let me know right?

[Thanks, Rob]

Just to let you know I saw it too and called immediately when the link didn’t work. Spent a lot of time on the phone with Telus AND HTC and as always got a run around. The Guy at HTC was really nice and was really confused when he went to Telus’ Site and the link didn’t work. He said Check back in a day or two. So here’s hoping!

Thanks! So now we know I’m not just seeing things at least.

    will let you know….

    I hope this happens!
I was actually just trying to make a goldcard to root my Hero and upgrade myself. No luck with a Lexar brand microsd though.

I had enough of Telus’ bullshit and ended up doing the upgrade myself.

It was actually pretty easy once I found a forum post explaining it step by step. XDA has some pretty helpful people on there, that didn’t mind me blowing my top when I explained how freakin’ complicated I thought it was.

I have to say, the GPS Nav alone is worth the upgrade. You’d probably want to root anyways, in order to get some added functionality out of the phone.

Just download Universal Androot (to allow you to install a ROM), APN Backup & Restore (to backup Telus’ HSPA server addresses) and VilliamROM12 (which is the most popular 2.1 ROM) and there’s one other app you need, which I can’t remember! It’s all on the XDA forums though

Where exactly is (or was, I should say) this box on the telus site? I can’t even find a downloads section..

  • http://twitter.com/pedram13 Pedram Abarham

Precisely. That section has been taken down by Telus

On a side note. I was in a Telus store in London today with my HTC Desire and they told me to check their website next week for a software update. They wouldn’t tell me exactly what it was (probably because they don’t know), but they said it was an Android update. I already have 2.1, I’m trying not to get my hopes up, but I thought I’d pass it along in case you guys are interested.

Asked a dude in a telus store last night…
Had no idea what I was talking about lol

I called Telus today and persisted in getting an answer. I eventually got the “supervisor” to say that they’re planning to release the 2.1 update “late September to mid-October.”

I’ll believe it when I see it, but it was nice to get a specific answer, at least.

I noticed something tonight as well. The Hero on Telus’ website no longer exists. Nothing! It is almost as if it’s EOL! Weird, I had no idea it was on it’s way out before it had the momentum to take off and be a potentially awesome phone! I am pissed.

Well it looks like we now have been “Officially” screwed over. After months of customer support telling me its “coming soon” and store reps saying the company is “working on it” the htc Hero page is not even on the site anymore… THANK YOU TELUS! I love been lied to over and over.

Well, co-incidentally Telus removed HTC Hero from their line-up! I recently contacted both Telus and HTC regarding any upgrading to Android 2.1. Reason being there is a lot of apps that require Android 1.6 as a minimum requirement. I suggested to Telus that it should make better business sense for subscribers to use more data. So this was my solution: Telus please exchange my Hero phone with Android 1.5 for a Hero phone with Android 2.1. I am not upgrading my phone to a different model, nor am I seeking a different model phone. It is simply a Hero phone for a Hero phone. So, telus discontinuing to sell the Hero comes across as Telus killing that suggestion. If this is the case, then I interpret this move as Telus saying to us subscribers ‘leave us alone and go screw yourself’. They got us locked into a contract so their income is guaranteed. Customer satisfaction and care will not cost them a penny, nor would they impress upon HTC for us subscribers to get an update.

The 2.1 upgrade for Telus Hero is up at the Telus support site for the Hero. It will take you to HTC’s Hero support site. I don’t have time today to do the upgrade, but I hope it’s still up tomorrow.
