Telus HTC Desire To Launch At $79.99?

Earlier this week, Telus held an event for the HTC Desire where the company officially announced that the device was “coming soon”. Telus did not supply any official dates or pricing but we do know that the Desire will ship with Android OS 2.1.

We also know that in July 2010, an HTC representative reported that the upcoming HTC Desire would receive the Android 2.2. update. The device will ship with Android 2.1, but it will be upgradable.

The time line for the Android 2.2 update for the HTC Desire was estimated at around Summer/Fall 2010.

Now, early reports of pricing have started to come in. Initial pricing rumors peg the HTC Desire at $79.99 with a 3-year voice and data plan agreement. The outright price is rumored at $449.99.

The HTC Desire will ship with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.7-inch display, a 5-megapixel camera with flash , and WiFi. The device can further hold up to 16GBof storage with a microSD card.

I don’t know how scientific this is, but if you go to http://www.telusmobility.com/en/NS/smartphones/index.shtml and then sort “by price,” the Desire falls between the HTC Touch Pro ($50 with contract) and the Hero ($30). So maybe it will cost a bit less?

So I am assuming that when I buy the phone outright from Telus they should be able to unlock it for me ? or do I need to find a way to unlock it ?

mobileincanada.com sells unlock codes for many brands. It might be prudent to send them an email and check it they have unlock codes for the HTC Desire/Triumph. I believe the codes cost $20 (at least the last time I checked)

It almost seems on the surface that Rogers is shying away from HTC for their Android phones. Except for the old Dream and Magic, all there other recent Android phones have been a mix of Moto, LG, Sony, and Acer. Maybe strategic, maybe they have some kind of squable with HTC, or maybe they just indeed were caught sleeping, as HTC seems to be the GoTo guys for the best range of Android phones.

My contract has been up for months and I've been going back and forth between iOS and Android, can't decide. I've decided to put my fate into Telus' hands. Whichever Telus releases first, the Desire or the iPhone4 will be my choice…

I have used http://www.cellunlock.net to unlock a different type of phone (Motorola). They promptly responded to my questions, were inexpensive, fast, and their web site says they also unlock HTC phones.

any phone bought via carrier will be locked to said carrier. if you buy one unlocked then it will work with rogers but if you buy it via telus it will be locked with telus.
