Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Almost Here For Rogers

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is an Android device that has been talked about since early January 2010 (maybe even earlier). At that time, Rogers had indicated that the device would be available sometime in the second quarter of 2010, which translates to April, May, or June. While waiting, prospective Xperia X10 owners were given this Rogers page to work with where users could sign up for updates.

Shortly afterward, some of the technical specifications for the Rogers Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 were made available. You can check those out below:

  • 119 × 63 x 13mm; Weighs 135 grams
  • 4-inch WVGA (480×854 pixels) capacitive touchscreen
  • GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3.5mm audio jack
  • 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 CPU
  • 8GB microSD card included; 1GB internal memory
  • Pre-loaded applications such as Mediascape and Timescape
  • 8.1-megapixel camera with 16x digital zoom, auto-focus, touch focus, facial recognition, smile detection, geo-tagging image, & video stabilizer
  • Android 1.6

The specs sound decent, everything right up to the last point being Android 1.6. After seeing that, almost everyone turned their heads from the Xperia X10. However, Sony Ericsson came in to save the day and indicated that even though the Xperia X10 will launch with Android 1.6, it will be upgradable:

What I hope to get across to you all, is that there will be a software update for Xperia X10 that will upgrade the complete Sony Ericsson User Experience Platform based on newer version of the Android OS.

What is not clear is what this upgrade is exactly. Since Android is currently sitting on OS 2.1, I would hope that the 1.6 shipping OS will be upgradable almost immediately to 2.1, but with Rogers being the Xperia X10 carrier, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Fast-forwarding to the end of March 2010, Rogers customers who opted to receive news regarding the Xperia X10 received an email that said:

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is almost here – exclusively from Rogers… PLUS! Stay tuned for additional info on an exclusive Xperia X10 pre-order

So the Xperia X10 is no longer “coming soon” as it was previously, but has now moved to “almost here”. Prospective Xperia X10 owners were then given a new pre-order site to play on.

If we back up to the original Rogers information regarding the Xperia X10, it would seem that a release date will most definitely be April 2010 and not May or June. Early pricing for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 puts the device at $599.99 outright and $149.99 on a 3-year agreement.

So, does the Xperia X10 sounds like your next Android device?

Rogers killed my unbridled enthusiasm with the Dream fiasco. Even though I'm anxious to move away from the Dream's limitations, being able to upgrade is incredibly important with Android. So I will wait and see. This device is likelier to be more than $150/$550 to purchase with some pricing putting it more than $800. The obvious comparison is the N1. With N1 you have full control over upgrades, and a more vibrant screen, though less usable in sunlight. The camera is important to me, N1's camera seems to more detailed but X10's richer and probably much better low light performance, Sony's approach to picture lighting is a lot more sensible — just leave the damn light on, don't pretend it's a bulb. A critical element, battery life, remains to be seen.
