Sony Ericsson Introducing Playstation Phone Running Android 3.0?

These days, iPhone owners seem to get all the love when it comes to gaming. Apple’s strong push behind games and the iPod Touch as a gaming device has certainly led to a lot of focus and development in that area for the iOS platform. Android gaming is playing a bit of catchup with popular titles such as Angry Birds finally coming to the platform soon. In fact, IGN recently started writing Android game reviews.

But things may be about to change big time. The folks at Engadget are pretty confident that Sony is going to be releasing a PSP Go-like smartphone along with an entirely new gaming platform all running on… wait for it… Android 3.0 Gingerbread! As insane and crazy as it sounds, being arguably the biggest tech blog on the planet means they probably don’t run just any rumour that knocks on their door.

According to their source, the hardware will be branded Xperia along with Playstation and it will include slide out game controls. The D-pad will be there but instead of a miniature joystick like on the PSP, you’re getting a “long touch pad” to replace. Along with this, you get a full gaming platform on 3.0 with big titles such as God of War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and LittleBigPlanet, all supposedly getting ready to be launched. These games will all run on the “Playstation Phone” but might also be compatible with other phones that have the proper hardware support eventually.

Personally, i’ve never been one to play too many games on my phone. Games that try to make you use a virtual joystick just blow it for me and other than a few fun titles like Doodle Jump and Paper Toss, I don’t play games on my phone. I do partially blame the Android Marketplace as app discovery is extremely poor and finding a really good app or game usually requires a separate Google search. However, this sounds extremely exciting and I cannot wait to see the final product when it is released. The phone is rumoured to release as early as October.

Does this interest you? Do you play games on your phone? How long before we see this in Canada?

I don't play much on my phone either but these things will definitely sell like crazy. Heck, I just might consider it if I can play COD on the go…

Gaming is not what I'd buy a phone for personally, but this would be a cool example of why I love Android. It's an open platform, and manufacturers and developers can get really creative with it. It makes me wonder if Sony (or somebody) could theoretically end up selling lightweight, standalone bluetooth game pads and basically turn any Android 3.0 device into a PSP-Xperia or whatever they end up calling this thing.. Knowing Sony though they will want to keep it restricted to their hardware and their hardware only..

You can count on Sony to make things as proprietary as possible. I'm really excited to see what they can do with this.

I know! It just seems so promising. I like the idea of being able to carry one device and having blockbuster titles to play on it.

This would be great if there were some new battery technology. We need batteries that lasts longer without tripling the size of the device if we r to combine full gaming capabilities and a something important like a phone.

That's my main concern too when I hear about doing graphic heavy things on my daily phone. Smartphones still struggle to keep up with a full day's usage, Although I have to admit iPhone 4 does a better job at this than any phone I've personally used.

will definitely consider getting this as it is just one device to replace the many others that I have already (compact camera, shit QWERTY phone, PSP-2000, DS XL, etc.)

For the record, I haven’t played PSP games in a while but I mainly use it to watch movies using PMPAdvance (an excellent homebrew video player)
