Samsung Galaxy Spica Gets 2.1 For Rogers, Not An Easy Install

So you know how HTC Magic+ owners got their 2.1? And how they get it as an OTA (over the air) update right to their phone? Well, The Galaxy Spica has also been blessed with 2.1 Eclair except the fact that it’s a manual update.

The Rogers Buzz twitter account has indeed confirmed that 2.1 is now out for the Galaxy Spica. But the link they’ve given us leads to an update file (which only works on Windows) and a PDF instruction file on how to manually install this onto your phone.

I don’t really know what they’re thinking but I’m gonna assume that update is gonna be pushed out to phones soon enough in a much less technical method. Has anyone tried this or even better been able to update on their phone?

I spotted notification of this update on an Android forum a few weeks back. You need to use KIES to get the proper driver installed for your phone, particularly if using Windows 7. Then you need to acquire Samsung’s New PC Studio. Plug your phone in, and assuming you got the right drivers through KIES it should detect your phone’s model – and notify of an update being ready. Obviously, be sure to backup your data and not unplug the phone when updating the firmware.

yeah, i believe i may have tweeted this to AICs Twitter account a week or 2 ago (august 26 actually). this definitely isn’t an easy update.

one thing that the guide doesn’t tell you is that you may need to put your phone in download mode in order for the update to trigger once it’s been downloaded to your PC. in order to boot into download mode you need to hold VOLUME DOWN, CAMERA BUTTON, and END CALL/POWER while the phone is booting.

before i knew about this, the firmware would download but when it was trying to install to my phone it stalled with my phone stuck on the Samsung logo screen. worked like a charm once in download mode though.

it’s a nice update for the Spica. a few bugs though (i noticed that i can’t restore to factory settings via SD CARD AND PHONE STORAGE settings after the update (had to use the phone dial code to do it). also, i’m noticing that the WI-FI and Bluetooth MAC addresses are listed as “unknown”.

bugs aside, this update is definitely an improvement over 1.5. it’s nice to be able to have more than 3 home screens and access to Grafitti input (finally). the android market is nicer and i like the menus much more. the browser is even better.

by the way, according to popular opinion an OTA update isn’t possible for the spica. so those who have it probably shouldn’t hold their breath…this update has been up on samsung’s site since early august. if they were going to push it out OTA it probably would have been done.
