Rogers/HTC Change Their Minds, Will Update HTC Dream And Magic

by Billy on January 5th, 2010

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

We just got word that Rogers/HTC have made a complete 180-degree turn and have decided to push out updates for HTC Dream and Magic owners!

Originally, both HTC and Rogers had cut support for either device, but there seems to be a small change of heart. The new update will bring the SenseUI to the HTC Magic but will keep the OS at 1.5. More importantly, the Magic will be receiving Android 2.1! The Dream however, while receiving some kind of update, will stay at 1.5 due to hardware limitations.

While rooting is still an option, and will be to get 1.6 truly, at least Magic devices will officially be receiving Android 2.1.

Check it out below:

While there has been a lot of confusion regarding software updates for these devices – we want to make sure that everyone knows that Rogers has been pushing hard to ensure the best possible outcome for all customers who have purchased an HTC Dream and Magic. Although we previously announced that we did not plan an upgrade to either device, we have reevaluated based on Rogers request and agreed to move forward.

First, we will be implementing an update for the 1.5 OS to both the HTC Dream and HTC Magic in the upcoming weeks. These will offer a number of benefits for these devices, including bringing the HTC Sense experience to the HTC Magic, although the OS version will remain 1.5.

By mid-year, HTC will issue an upgrade to Android 2.1, including the highly
acclaimed HTC Sense experience for the HTC Magic.

However, due to certain limitations on the HTC Dream, the software path for the HTC Dream will not be developed beyond the next Android 1.5 update.

just conacted htc regarding the new update to the Rogers Magic and here is what they had to say..

Thank you for contacting HTC Support.

HTC is not currently planning any Android 1.6 or higher upgrades for Rogers Dream or Magic. Android 1.6 or was only made available for “Google”-branded devices such as the G1. It is not available for HTC-branded products such as the Dream or Magic, which use Android 1.5. We believe that Android 1.5 is a stable and reliable software platform that delivers a terrific user experience. To ensure we consistently deliver a great experience, HTC and Rogers will shortly be releasing updates to both Dream and Magic software that address a few issues and provide some enhancements. Please check the Rogers or HTC Canada websites for details.

Once again, thank you for contacting HTC Support.

    Regards,

    HTC Support

Until Rogers & HTC come up with some type of compensation for Dream users whether it be exchange of handsets, early termination of contracts or software upgrades this will not go away.Rogers and HTC are selling a outdated phone that they are not even willing to support and the phone should be pulled from their lineup or given away free with full disclosure of the issue and Rogers HTC Dream customers should be offered a compensation considering is very obvious the customer was mislead into what they were buying.

Does this mean Canada finally gets paid apps?

It's total baloney that the dream can't be upgraded as unlike the US version, the rogers version has the same amount of ram (256MB) as the magic. The G1 on t-mobile has 192MB, so it appears someone at rogers read the incorrect specs.

Anyway it's too late for me, I am fed up with the lame excuses for the past 6+ months from the idiots at rogers and will be canceling my phone service and moving to wind, and if rogers gives me any lip about etf I will take them to court (nexus one ftw!).

Did you look on the HTC site before making this comment? It clearly states that the Dream on Rogers has 192Mb of RAM and 256MB of ROM. The Magic on Rogers has 288MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM. So the Dream on Rogers is exactly the same as the G1 in the US, it's the Magic on Rogers that is better than the MyTouch on T-Mobile. Check your facts before commenting.

You are correct, I was wrong about the dream, it only has the same amount of ram as the g1 in the states (192MB), so there is possibly good reason why 2.1 won't work on it.
