Rogers Opens Preorders For Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

Yesterday, Best Buy began to open in-store preorders for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. The requirement was a $50 in-store deposit and then prospective customers would receive a notification when their device arrives. Today, Rogers officially began to also offer preorders for the Xperia X10, however Rogers has made the offer rather interesting.

Unlike Best Buy, if you preorder the Xperia X10 from Rogers, customers receive a free Bluetooth headset and a chance to win two tickets to the FIFA World Cup! However, the preorder does come with a 3-year agreement and minimum $50 monthly spend. The device itself is $149.99.

Rogers has further indicated that if customers preorder by April 9, 2010, they will receive delivery for the week of April 12, 2010. Also to note that the preorder offer expires on April 14, 2010.

Thanks for the press release, AndroidInCanada. I'm sure it'll be real exciting for the person who wins FIFI tickets.

More usefully, I notice Rogers is unusually suggesting customers on a contract may be interested in this device. This is a breakthrough considering their usual party line that people would only get a new device on their contract schedule. Anyone have any idea what the cost would be, say, for an Android enthusiast who got sucked into the Dream fiasco?

I would call Rogers and talk to them about the whole Dream/Magic fiasco.
It's possible you can get an early upgrade or straight upgrade. Worth a
    call–good luck.

That would be nice, and appropriate. However I'm not sure I'm interested in the X10. I got the Dream because the keyboard is important to me, and despite being a larger (too large, really), higher res device, reports seem to indicate the X10's virtual keyboard is not very good. Too bad, camera quality is also important to me and it's probably good there. I don't know of any Android devices on the horizon that would suit my needs.

Maybe Motorola Milestone would be good for you? I've got it from Telus, unlocked and use on Rogers network. I like it.

If I had to pick today I'd definitely pick the Milestone/Droid, but I'm limping along with the Dream as long as I can on the theory SE X10 will at least step up camera expectations (iPhone 3GS has good cam quality under most conditions, including low light with no flash, we should expect the same). LG has a promising device with keyboard that may be coming out in a few months. Or maybe SE will satisfy the multitouch/OS upgrade issues and I'll resign myself to the huge size..

One thing that no one is talking about is why are consumers paying what are effectively subsidized device prices when they're buying third party handsets? If the subsidized part is $400 over two years, shouldn't we be paying about $16 less a month? Shouldn't a $90 monthly bill be $74?

I was really excited about this phone, still honestly very tempted to pre-order tonight or tomorrow, always been a big fan of SE hardware design, but the fact that they didn't include a hardware keyboard on a device clearly targeted at the high-end of the market, often users like myself who do a lot of text input in various forms, and then to read the poor review of the virtual keyboard by engadget have given me cold feet. Lack of multi-touch is pretty disappointing as well, though that alone wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me, multi-touch tends to make software keyboards much more usable, it's handy in other situations as well, and when putting together such a high-end flagship type device it's just downright shocking that they would think it acceptable to throw in a panel that apparently doesn't even support dual touch. Sure, I could live without multitouch if the software keyboard was flawless, but it's sounding so far like that's far from the case, which is most definitely a deal-breaker for me. I'm also not quite sold on the custom Sony UI. If it can be rooted and use other, community-supported ROMs that may not such a big issue though.

Rogers seems to be pushing the pre-orders really hard on this though, making it very tempting and I'm a little suspicious as to why that might be, given what seems to be a trend of the latest and greatest device taking center stage every couple months despite not being quite ready, and updates being promised at some unspecified point in the future. If I pre-ordered this thing and it falls flat in such a fundamental area as text entry I would be fuming mad at both Rogers and SE, but honestly not terribly surprised at this point. Both companies have done enough boneheaded things before.

Anyway.. tl;dr comment, but I'm essentially trying to convince myself to pull the trigger on a preorder, and now that I consider how easily the input application can be changed on Android, I'm not as worried about the keyboard. The relatively high quality camera, music, display and blazing fast CPU for me outweigh any initial firmware/software quirks. I've never been the kind of person to be content with the stock settings on anything, and the beauty of Android is in it's openness and customizability. If Sony/Rogers can't get their act together on the software I'm pretty confident the community will get this thing running extremely well.
