Had a feeling something was up with the HTC Dream. Rogers gave me mine for $99 a month ago on a 3 year contract.

I wonder if we can use this to get price protection from a purchase at Future Shop?

Gotta say that while the it has nice features and Android is great, the Dream is clearly a bit underpowered. I’m happy to have it for a baseline, but if I already had a serviceable smartphone, I’d wait until something with better performance came along. A better camera and light sensor would be important too, battery hasn’t been that much of an issue for me though more is always better. However, there aren’t any Androids with keyboards in the predictable future, which is a nice feature of the Dream.

Why can’t the main board be modular? Sigh.

Bizarrely, I’ve had many problems with GPS, both network based and chip based. It will often report my location a km or so off, sometimes in the lake! My girlfriend’s iPhone 3Gdoes not have this problem. Her iPhone is also faster on to start and finish downloading pages. I’m quite disappointed with that. Anyone else?

My first phone had a dead pixel.

Replacement they sent had a faulty GPS ( had trouble getting enough sat to give a position) which i could have miss and simply think the gps was crappy if i didn’t had a working one before.

My second replacement(3rd phone) seem all ok.

I still feel that my $30/6gig limit is still better than $75 off one time.

Regular price for data is $80/5gig, I’m saving $50 per month and still get more data lol

In two month’s time I’ll save more money than late comers who get this deal

The early bird gets the “tastier” worm lol

  5. davidm says:

Re: GPS, I’m surprised there could be so much variance at the chip level.

I’m sure data plans will come and go. The average person is not going to even use 500mb, but I want to have the option.

With regard to my earlier post, where I called the Dream “underpowered,” I had been following people’s advice to let apps close themselves. However, with the multitasking OS (unlike *ahem* some other devices that can’t run more than one program at a time), some apps do get stuck, so I now use a program like TasKiller to keep performance and battery life reasonable.

I’\m still not sure about GPS though, and the camera function is unfortunately bad.

Oh yeah, for anyone not following the news, the Magic & Dream are now rooted, so we can tether and use the pay market.

    • AmaruPhoenix says:

Yeah I’ve been following Haykuro’s HTC Dream rooting process, he managed to do it, but do you have a link that shows step by step on how to root?

We should all donote to him and buy him some nesquik

      Boy genius!

  6. CraigB says:

Doh! And here I was thinking the offer of $179 with a $50 mail-in rebate was great (albeit, they have yet to send me the mail-in rebate). Guess I’ll call them and tell them I want in on this deal.

    Still..Love my HTC dream.

  7. davidm says:

I donated to the ‘nesquick’ fund.. not sure it was necessary ultimately but it is nice to see people cooperate.

I am going to let others refine and work out the kinks then will root my Dream, have an upcoming trip where tethering will be very handy.

  8. Samuel Maskell says:

Call Rogers now! you can get a 50 dollar credit on your account if you payed 150 for your magic/dream.
