Rogers HTC Magic+ 2.1 Update Released. Finally!

They said August, but that didn’t happen. They approved it and it’s finally rolling out. What all you Magic owners have been waiting for. You guys who bought the first Android phone in Canada. You who waited all those months, checking sites like ours for an update on its status. It’s finally here, Android 2.1.

Reports started coming in very early this morning that Rogers is pushing out the long awaited 2.1 update to Magic users. Now before you get too excited, these rollouts aren’t immediate to everyone. But rest assured that it’s coming down the pipes and it should be a matter of a few days now.

You’ll get a notification telling you to update. To manually check on your phone: settings, about phone, software update check, check manually. Don’t worry, Rogers won’t charge you if you download this one over their 3G.

But if you’re feeling a little less patient and a little more adventurous, I threw the manual update file link in the source below for your convenience. Just make sure to read the instructions. And with that, I welcome you to Android 2.1, it’s great to have you here.

I Want My One Point Six: “IMPORTANT TO NOTE: HTC says on their site that this update will delete anything on internal memory that is not part of the OS (contacts, calendar, etc). Only data on the microSD card will be untouched. I’m not sure what that means for installed apps, but you might want to back up first!”

Anyone else having GPS issues with Google Navigation?

Anyone else notice that you are not able to get live wallpapers?

  • LAHAL

I’m not seeing live wall papers as well.

  • LAHAL

I waited forever for this update, and the lack off Live Wallpaper really pisses me off. I wonder what else they took out. I choose not to root, because I figured a official update would be better then a hacked one. Well, I guess its time to root the Magic and install some Cyanogen mods. I’m really disappointed Rogers, major FAIL.

bricked me device… stupid update now I’m phoneless for 5 days. Thank you Rogers and HTC thank you

Update worked fine for me, but only on the second attempt. First time through, it told me I didn’t have enough free memory. I deleted a few apps, retried and it went smoothly. For me, GPS appears to acquire satellites more quickly now. And the phone connects to my Plantronics Backbeat headset every time now. Yay! I don’t really care about live wallpaper, so not a big issue for me.

  • Anti-SA

I updated, it worked perfectly fine for me. No deleted data that I noticed, it even kept my apps. I haven’t had much time to test it, but I’m overall very happy with the update.

Looks like there is no standard Home (not on the market either), so there is no way to turn off Sense. I don’t see promised Google Navigation. Does anyone know what’s going on? Update went clean from the first time and the phone shows 2.1 update 1 in the status.

  • Cababunga

Why do you think live wallpapers should be available in the Sense UI? I’m pretty sure Sense has completely different set of backgrounds from that contained in the standard Home application.

  • Dan

Seriously live wallpapers on this under powered device would not be worth putting in. The cyanogen mods for the dream and magic exclude it as well for performance, space, and battery reasons.

  • Cababunga

Ok, so I rebooted my phone and after that Google Maps appeared as the first search result on the market (not tagged as installed, even though I have the previous version of that application on my phone). After update to the new version of the app, navigation started working.

I want to confirm that the update doesn’t delete data. The only thing I lost was a fido’s APN that I set up previously. Most of you use these phones on Rogers anyway, so no worries. If you do use your phone on another network, take time to write down your APN settings, so you don’t have to google for them later.

  • LAHAL

The Live Wallpaper is a standard feature of 2.1. Doesn’t matter if its running Sense or anything else. So they took the time to take it out. That makes no SENSE hehe.

The other thing that was taken out is the pinch to zoom feature I had on the previous (legal) version. I’m very disappointed to lose this…

In Halifax, still waiting for this to be pushed out to me…

  • Cababunga

If you wait, you can wait for up to 14 days for this to happen. That’s how often your phone checks for system updates. Go to Settings->About phone->System software updates, and touch “Check now” button.

I’m manually checking for updates on my magic (On Rogers in Halifax, NS) and as of 10:30 this Monday morning, I STILL don’t have the update :(

  • Threewheel42

My Magic is on ATT and after checking for updates, it downloaded and installed smoothly…only lost the APN settings and of course and had reorganize all my screens…but no lost data.

  • Vehd

My ‘check now’ states my phone is upto date! Firmware version 1.5, baseband version 63.18.5506KU_6.35.10.18,which I updated re: 911 fiasco. What gives!!

  • atlas

Here in montreal, a friend of mine has the update since last friday. And me: I’m waiting……

  • Anonymous

Persistence seems to pay off. I clicked Check Now multiple times within a minute. On the third time it found the update. I’m downloading it now.

  • ph0enix1211

On Rogers in Halifax and I It just popped up on the manual check now — It said I didn’t have enough storage space, I cleared some, it says it needs 82 MB, I have 93 MB free now, but it still says insufficient storage :(

    Any ideas?

After initially having some problems using the manual download from HTC (e.g. usb connection error 171), … this morning after “Check new software” … I received the download directly to my phone.

First attempt to install failed with memory issues, … and after removing some of the apps, .. the new OS was finally installed properly.

All the apps were preserved, … the only thing missing were the icons from my screens. Everything seems to be working fine, … and really enjoy the new OS …

Thanks Rogers/HTC for making this update available, … I’ve been waiting for many, many months ….

Hopefully these updates will be made available more often, … also I hope Google follows the Apple approach to have new OS only once a year … and not every few months as it’s happening now. This should allow Rogers/HTC to prepare in advance for the updates …

I just received the upgrade notification yesterday. I followed on screen instruction and it installed perfectly. I am really enjoying my Magic now. Before I was thinking about iPhone 4 but now I am very excited and happy with my phone.

I did the Update about 2 weeks ago. Has anyone else had problems with the phone restarting on them. It happens to mine about once a day. Also the operating system seems to run a little buggy now.
