I upgraded to froyo (android 2.2) last night, and it fixed the issue for me!
http://is.gd/K7IoS3
Process could have been easier (had a few driver issues) but I got through it.

I've had the same problem with my original HTC Dream and the one they sent me to replace the "broken" one... for some reason the phone disconnects itself from the network randomly without letting me know, so about 5 or 6 times a day when trying to make a phone call or send a text message it fails and gives me no other explanation than "call/text message could not send" and would not work again until I restarted my phone, which was usually followed by a slew of missed calls and texts from the time my phone decided to be retarded. I will never buy another HTC product as long as I live.

I had just bought my phone so it wasn't a whole lot of work putting my settings and apps back on. The latest release fixed the issue for me.

HTC Dream has the same problem... try the app called Missed Reminder. It can monitor whether you have any SMS/MMS messages waiting and flash the LED red, blue, orange, green or pink. It works for me.
