Rogers Begins Pushing Out Android ROM Update For HTC Magic/Dream

by Billy on January 22nd, 2010

On Friday, many users have begun to receive notifications of a new ROM upgrade for their HTC Magic/Dream. The update is a fix for the recent GPS-911 issue affecting both the HTC Magic and HTC Dream. The update also includes the SenseUI.

The notification has come in the form of a text message and prompts users to download a file. The file weighs in at approximately 65MB and is a Windows XP/Vista-only .EXE file. This does cause Mac users an issue (Windows 7 or Macintosh users will need to call 1-888-Rogers1 for update instructions).

The other thing to note about the ROM update is that it will wipe (delete) the device. To avoid this, it is recommended that users back up their HTC Magic/Dream before install.

To download the update, Rogers HTC Dream and Magic owners should visit the following links:

Also, please note the following regarding Rogers disabling Internet access for HTC Dream and Magic users:

Customers who have not downloaded this software update could have problems accessing 911. As a result, we are taking the precautionary measure of temporarily disabling internet access for Dream and Magic users on Sunday January 24 at 6:00AM (EST). Voice and text messaging will not be impacted. By disabling internet access, we can ensure that 911 calls are completed for all our Dream and Magic customers. Once a customer completes the software update, his/her internet access will be re-enabled within 24 hours.

Temporarily disabling internet access is the only decision we could make to ensure all customers can make 911 calls. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. Dream and Magic customers on data plans will automatically be credited for one month of data fees (excluding roaming). This credit will show up on invoices within 60 days.

Two things to understand:

1.) As a Dream/Magic user, you will have no Internet access until you apply the update.

2.) Make sure you get that data plan credit.

So, do you use an HTC Magic or Dream? Have you received the notification?

Why did I ever get mixed up with Rogers?! I ordered the Magic upgrad and then they cancelled it without telling me. When I contacted me they told me that they didn't send it because of the 911 issue. So I'm stuck with the Dream. I'm under contract but these bastards and their shoddy support have just lost a customer.
  • dan_christensen
Ever since the ROM upgrade, my HTC Dream loses data connectivity once or twice a day. It happens even when the phone is idle (e.g. overnight) in a high signal strength location. Phone service is fine. If I switch to airplane mode and back, 3G connectivity returns. But if I don't do this, the data connectivity doesn't seem to return. This never happened before the upgrade. Is anyone else seeing it? Any suggestions?
  • Fabian Rodriguez
We need a Facebook group to bring some media attention to this matter.

I don't have time to set one up though, hopefully someone can take 5 minutes for that and invite us all.
  • nostriluu
There's already a Google Android in Canada group -

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=photos&ref=... - I'm an admin, can add others.

It could be used for this kind of advocacy.
  • Eugene
... there's no SenseUI on my Dream after the update. What gives? :(
  • Scott
I just thought I would share another link. Someone started a thread on xda for just finding an root fix. Haykuro is looking into it:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?...
  • I was contently running CyanogenMOD from day two, and was right pissed at having my internet cut off for no good reason. After a day of trying to reason with Rogers, I spent about two days looking for a fix and found it with CursorSense32A. I have my 3G back but because I am now running 1.5 a few choice apps won't run on my phone now, and I have apps2sd issues. Rogers knows that they can't force us to run their software, but they still try. This fiasco really pissed me off, resulted in the first and second time I have ever called for support, and prompted me to look into taking my $80+ plan somewhere else.
  • darron
i have not received my credit as yet...
how would you obtain it? do you have to call them or should it just appear on your bill? i have already received my will 2 days ago but there is no credit...
  • Bill
what credit are you referring to? the "911" credit? Look for it on your bill - I believe Rogers said within 60 days it should appear on your bill. If not - call them. If you're looking for the $50 credit for upgrading from the Dream to the Magic, you need to mail in the mail-in rebate. However, if you're like me, you didn't get the mail-in rebate form when you got the Magic (big surprise there), however, you can simply download the rebate form from Rogers in that case (just google it). Hope this helps.
  • mcinerney
Can anyone suggest a good voice dialing program as this update seems to have removed the functionality(lol) completely from the phone?
  • mcinerney
After 2 weeks of waiting I finally just got mine.
  • HDog
I hate Rogers like the rest of them. But this 911 & Dream to Magic exchange fiasco has yielded me more handouts that I every received from Rogers in the past.

    $50 hardware upgrade credit
$50 credit for doing the 911/SenseUI thing
$200 selling Dream when I got my Magic for free

Could be worse. but still hate them!
  • nostriluu
They have the ability to make people appreciate table scraps. How much are you paying per year for these handouts?

Imagine if you could use any device on their network without ambiguity, like you can your wired internet or phone line. Or buy a new device any time at a pro-rated price without hassle.
  • Success! I was able to follow instructions at the following link and upgrade my Rogers branded HTC Dream down from CM to Rogers' crappy 1.5 update, but retaining dev SPL and community recovery image. (NOTE: I had root, I never installer their firmware, which would have overwritten the SPL and recovery images)

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=...

The plan is to use this state to get my data back, and then recover from nandroid. Will continue to update.

    http://www.jukie.net/~bart/blog/20100125191021

WIND Mobile is so close to opening its doors in Ottawa. I for one am very excited to be leaving all this nonsense behind.
  • nostriluu
You're lucky. I had been holding off 'updating' my Dream but couldn't do without data so I gave in.

We should organize a revolutionary Rogers campaign - support us or we'll switch! But unfortunately I think most people would rather gloat over their minor personal successes than make everyone's life (including their own) better.

    1. pro-rated device upgrading without heinous penalties
    2. shorter contracts with better incentives
    3. ability to run any device just like we would on the Internet or our phone lines

Rogers has record profits as it is, seems reasonable no?
  • Unfortunately Rogers would prefer to have you off their network then permit you to have a modded phone. See this post:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=...
  • nostriluu
Do that one rep's preferences really matter? I don't think it's actually legal for them to do this.

Is it time for a "revolution" (their words)?
  • Hope that WIND Mobile with shake up the cartel in Canada a bit.

Haykuro is on our side and is trying what he can for us. Here are some links:

Here is Haykuro's newest xda forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?...

A bonus for me: The update included WPA2-Enterprise wireless security. I now connect to my works wireless network :)
  • Fabian Rodriguez
I have an HTC Dream, I don't see any of the Sense stuff nor WPA2 in my update.

    My build # is 1.89.631.1 146733 CL#94714 release-keys. Whats' yours ?
  • Bill
Hi Fabian, The Dream didn't get the Sense UI upgrade, just the Magic did.
  • andrzewi
Yes of course, you are right Bill
  • jag
Everyone with root check this out. may brick your phone though
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?...
  • Bill
What exactly does the 1 month of credit of data fees refer to, anyways? I'm on the $50 month voice/data plan that gives me 500MB of data along with my phone minutes. Am I going to get a $50 credit on my next bill then?
  • Billy_Android
You'll get what the data portion of your plan is "worth".
  • nostriluu
  • nostriluu
http://twitter.com/haykuro/status/8352678233 still not sure what this means, I haven't read the 1500 pages on xda-developer to figure it out. Anyone?
  • Scott
Thanks for posting. Unfortunately, his thing didn't work. But hopefully he will have something coming soon.
  • jag
    sounds promising. but how exactly?
  • nostriluu
    Not sure, it's why I asked. ;)
  • sergio
i just want to say that i actually love the update, i could really careless if my phone is rooted or not. heck i wouldn't be surprised if someone finds a way to root it anyway. so i don't think people should be to worried about that. Plus it's been announced that they will be updating the magic to 2.1 mid year, so i'm pretty content on hearing that. the reps i spoke to from rogers were smart enough enough to answer every single question i asked, even if it seemed as if i wasn't the first person to ask, and were just giving the same answer. The only problem i have with this update is that i have no data. and haven't had since sunday. i updated the phone on monday, thinking by tuesday 24 hrs later i'd get my data back. but i didn't, the rep told me to wait it out a few more hours and see what would happen, but i still have no H as they call it at the top of my screen. i was home tuesday night, so it didn't bother me that my data wasn't working as i have Wifi in the house. but on wednesday i still had no data, so i called rogers again, and we went through the whole settings and build number BS again. asked me to take out th battery numerous times, and still nothing. he then put me on hold came back 5 minutes later telling me some sort of BS that i'm in some sort of batch. people who downloaded on sunday would get there data back monday tuesday, and people who downloaded monday, would get it wednesday thursday. i asked about being compensated for this annoyance, and he said yes all magic and dream users will be getting one month of free data which will be mentioned in your upcoming bill. other then this the phone works fine, i backed up with mybackup on the market, you can buy the pro, but the trial version worked out fine. it does feel like a new phone with the new sense UI. i'm fine with it as long as they keep there promise and update to 2.1 later this year.
  • Relvis Pretzally
in the sense UI u can now turn on and off your mobile 3g network. check in yer settings n see if it is on or off. i had the same problem and i waited for an hour on tuesday. then an hour wednesday just to talk about the same things u mentioned above. then i started to browse the SETTINGS on the phone and went to WIRELESS CONTROLS and ull see right at the bottom MOBILE NETWORK and make sure its checked off. mine wasnt checked off so therefore i didnt have my 3g.
  • stu
the rogers website doesn't show the dream or magic for sale anymore. no more android? no more rogers!
  • RT
I'd imagine that they'd stop selling the phones until all the phones in their inventory are updated with the new rom's.
  • thesniperz
Didn't have to do update on my phone.. i was already running a 1.6 ROM and 911 was already fixed in 1.6.
I just called Fido on monday to do a network refresh on my phone and now I have data again.
I received a couple of the same txt messages after but hasn't disconnected my phone after the refresh..

    *knock on wood*
  • Fabian Rodriguez
If anyone using Linux is interested, I just completed my upgrade (HTC Dream), I documented it here:
    http://groups.google.com/group/android-users-in...
  • Jag
Is there no way to spoof a custom ROM so that it tricks Rogers and enables 3g?
  • nostriluu
Why spoof, putting yourself in dangerous territory, when it should be your right to run whatever you want (within reason) on your bandwidth?
  • jag
Well I agree, but Rogers doesn't give a rats ass about their customers, so a spoof could be a possible work around.
  • Dan B
This is definitely becoming a hot topic. I really don't understand why android users are being forced to use an obsolete and slow ROM with no option of running anything else. There is absolutely no way that Rogers would force iPhone users to not jailbreak their phones. For those of us running a solid version of Donut, why should we be subjected to this? Our 911 issue is non-existent. I tried explaining this to a Rogers "technical support" person to which they had no idea as to what I was talking about. All the CSR's and tech people are only trained on how you do the update, and know almost nothing else about the phone.

I recently went to a Rogers store to plead my case, essentially saying that I did not want my magic anymore because I don't want to run a slow and obsolete ROM. The CSR at the store said there was nothing they could do (obviously) and then continued to tell me that the phone I signed a three year contract for AND paid in excess of $150 for was obsolete months before Rogers even got their hands on the devices. Why should I be paying for something that doesn't work the way I want to? More importantly, why did Rogers even sell these phones in the first place?

    Please Mary@Rogers, tell me.
  • Paolo
I am so sick of Rogers I am going to Bell bringing with me home and business phone, 3 cell phones, VIP cable and internet at about $400 a Month, there you go Rogers.
  • randdd
They made the dream users (with Rogers) upgrade to the new rogers update by blocking their 3g, and if you did do the update, then your dream isn't rootable anymore. I understand that rogers don't want people to run modded rom, but you'd think they'd do something about all the jail broken iphones out there, which is far more than the HTC users.
  • nostriluu
Why shouldn't you be able to use the ROM of your choice? Shouldn't you be able to connect whatever you want to the Internet?
  • Bill
Judging by all the posts below, the unfortunate experience with Rogers has killed many people's impression with Android. I, for one, am not happy with Rogers, and quite frankly never will be because they simply don't give a sh!t about their customers. The could offer a million excuses, but it still comes down to them being too big of a company to not have to care. Having said that, it has tainted many users experience with Android. But, give it a chance and see it for the potential it has. For once, Microsoft and RIM have some solid competition if we can continue to back it (not with any help from a carrier standpoint (Rogers), but from an OS standpoint. I'm new to Android, but I love what it can do, and what it potentially has to offer in the future.
I've been a MS Mobile user in the past, and I will do everything I can to stay away from it - both on a mobile and laptop platform. I have Windows 7, but only out of necessity (ie; my wife). I use Ubuntu, and now with Android as my mobile OS, I'm finally feeling much free-er from the stranglehold of the industry monopolies.
  • nostriluu
I like Android too. More than RogersFido, that's for sure - who are just remarkably inconsiderate, even outside the bounds of reason.

I'm not so steamed about the 911 mistake itself, but if they are going to lay down the law about operating system version, it shows a big discrepancy between the RogersFido Internet and the real one.

Just like the real Internet, we should be able to run whatever we want as long as we pay a reasonable fee and stick to fair rules. Community developed versions of Android fixed the 911 bug months ago. Past excuses, it's shocking that $100/month bills are not enough to keep them content.

If they made a mistake in specifying the Dream, instead of offering the now out of date Magic, why not give customers a chance to upgrade to a more current device, with upgrade fee, in the summer.

The early adopters are obviously enthusiasts, if well tended will be high spending "barometer" customers, which is a win-win.

Even simpler and more fair, if the device is $600 retail, why can't replacement cost simply be pro-rated, so after 18 months, it'd cost $366 for a new device including $200 up front.

If there's a long term contract involved, concentrated in cities, we should be getting better incentives, like other regions of the world.

I'm already getting harmed by the false Rogers - Fido split - I switched one Fido line to Rogers to get an Android, thereby losing years of two-line tenure (you know, that thing you can sometimes use when begging for more favourable treatment - though you're probably not going to be able to trade your Androids for current iPhones with ordinary plans like this person - http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/rogers-free-...). I should have waited. And waited. Compared to the simple nature of the developing internet, this is incomprehensible.

I'm particularly incensed about the replacement issue because the iPhone my wife uses was lost (left in a resto after a long day, her purse was returned but not the phone). It was with Fido, after telling the sympathetic rep the situation I was "escalated," where the options for replacement became bizarre. Apparently to get a new iPhone, we'd have to to pay a cancellation fee for voice and data plans; $420, also lose our number and $200 of Fido dollars, then pay another $200 + $35 (plus taxes for all this) to activate a new account and iphone, and of course a renewed 36 month term. That's close to $1000, plus major inconvenience.

The rep claimed it's all Apple's demands. If true, that must be the most dysfunctional arrangement, ever.

Compared to these costs, I'm sure most people here would be ok paying $370 to upgrade (or replace) after 18 months, especially if they could sell or gift their original device. Nobody is losing out here under reasonable terms of devices on a commercial internet connection.

Rogers now has a social media representative (hi, sorry if it's harsh), It's an interesting move, but this role is clearly being reduced to repeating the corporate line. Rogers used the words "open" and "revolution" in marketing these devices, however they don't seem capable of dealing with their customers past misleading marketing and inconsiderate terms.

Anyway, thanks to anyone who read this far.

Does anyone use Task killer or the built in task manager? Everytime i tap it to kill the background apps, it kills absolutely everything and has to load things like the weather, messages(the text widget is pretty damn cool), and contacts. I never had a problem with the oem 1.5. Kind of a pain. Task Killers, Good or Useless? Any Thoughts
  • Jay
The same thing is happening to me. I'll kill everything and it'll load to the HTC loading screen for a minute or so and then load all my icons back...
  • I completed this update, phone works great. Unfortunately, it completely trashed the wireless network connection on my computer. It's completely gone. Pretty pissed off about this.
  • Bill
Heather, I'm not sure how or why anything on your computer would get trashed from the update. All it does it connect to your phone and run the ROM update. Did you get it working yet?
  • Sébastien
For those interested on how Rogers deals with Windows 7, Mac (or linux in my case), they just told me that they're going to send me a SD card to update my Magic. And of course it means another 3/4 days without 3G...
  • Annoyed
Same thing, they messed up though and didn't send after two calls...call them to make sure, they are idiots.
  • Bill
what was your issue with Windows 7? I have a post further down about how to get it to recognize HTC Sync.
  • Sébastien
I don't use windows (at all) so it's a bit difficult to use HTC sync to upgrade the firmware ;)
  • Bill
lol.. yeah, I guess that could pose a problem :-) But congrats on not using Windows!
  • Rob
Since the update, my alarm no longer works. Was late for work today. In addition, there are some apps no longer showing up in the Market.

For example, a flashcard program no longer appears. i've searched manually and I've scanned barcodes, to no avail.

    http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com...

    Any fixes for either problem?
  • brucemsmall
    Hi Rob,
I encountered the same problem with the Alarm no longer working. If the screen turns off, it will not sound. Later will sound when you wake up the phone. Got on live chat with Rogers and after an hour decided I was getting nowhere. I am searching for my real alarm clock ... Will also perhaps look through other alarms in the apps and test to see if they can wake up the phone properly.
  • Rob
Alarm didn't ring this morning on AM/PM format. Sigh....

My wife finds it amusing that her 50$ pay-as-you-go phone's alarm works and mine doesn't....
  • Rob
    Hi Bruce,

Did you set your clock to 24-hour setting or do you use AM/PM? I had set mine to 24-hour and I wonder if that might be causing the issue. I'm setting mine to AM/PM and will try the alarm again in the morning.

Strangely, if I set my alarm for any time after 12:00pm, it rings. It does not ring in the AM, so that's why I think that there might be a glitch in the 24 hour format. I'll post a message tomorrow to let you know if it worked.

Please let me know if you found any other decent alarm apps.
  • CraigB
I seem to no longer be able to download by far my most favourite and utilized app, NBA game time. I lived by this app for my NBA scores. It no longer shows up but nows there's some Rogers Sportsnet Mobile App. Great, if I wanted more hockey info I'd get it, but the NBA app was all I wanted and it's gone. Not to mention this morning when I did check out the SportsNet app, it still hadn't updated scores from 12 hours before.

Oh, and I seemed to have lost my net connectivity with my HTC Dream...again. I did get a call from Rogers telling me to run the upgrade, but this was 2 days after I already had, and hadn't received any info on having to do it previously, hence me thinking my phone was pooched over the weekend.

Just when I thought they were getting better.
  • Rob
Canadian cell phone signal providers need to get out of the selling/bundling cell phone business and just focus on providing us with a signal. The problems we're meeting is a unique North American problem due to being forced to get cell phones through service providers like Rogers. I hope that Google's Nexus phone goes big and causes a cell phone revolution where carriers no longer get involved in selling branded phones. 100% of these problems are directly correlated to branded phones.

I guarantee you the reason we're not seeing those apps in the market is due to the update giving our phones a unique version number which isn't recognized by all app developers on the market. Kinda like how we don't see google goggles because we're on 1.5.

I sent an email to the developer of the apps I can't download and I'm waiting for a reply. Maybe you can send NBA game time an email to see if that's the cause. Good luck!
  • CraigB
I've also noticed now that my browswer defaults to the Rogers Store. Not that we can buy any apps for android from it. This is all quite a load of BS.
  • There is a detailed and accurate account of the Rogers Dream/Magic fiasco in Canada here:
    http://www.litui.net/archives/796

It mentions complaining to the CRTC against this.

I am personally considering going to small court claims and return my phone / cancel my contract. The amount of time I've spent of this now greatly surpasses my capacity for extra IT hobbies and now my phone doesn't work as it's supposed to thanks to Rogers stupidity.

I'll be documenting my findings and results here:
    http://groups.google.com/group/android-users-in...

If anyone's interested in helping or using the same information, we can gather there.
  • Bill
I know that this post is off topic, but because of the number of people that read here, I wanted to mention it, in case it helps anyone else out. After I got my 'free' Magic, I tried to set it up to Sync with my pc and it would NOT detect HTC sync on my Windows 7 no matter what I tried. Reading the SD Card was no problem, but no luck with Sync. My pc was dual booting, so I tried it on Vista and it worked fine. I finally reformatted my pc yesterday and it still didn't work on Windows 7! So after googling everything I could think of, I finally found the answer - I had to change the ADB driver in Device manager to be 'My HTC', and not the default driver that was loading. After that, it worked instantly. Hope this helps anyone else who may be having problems.
  • Conte
Additionally, you could just install the Windows 7 compatible version of HTC Sync.
    http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_i...

It recognized my Magic right away on Windows 7 and the update was easy after that.
  • Bill
Hi Conte, I did install and reinstall the Windows 7 compatible version of HTC Sync more than once. The problem is, once the default driver is loaded, installing the HTC sync Windows 7 compatible version will not overwrite the driver that has already been installed. As soon as I pointed to the different drive in device manager, everything went smoothly. I thought that by simply deleting the driver and letting it reinstall would work, but it didn't, it kept installing the useless default driver. (oops.. did I just say that Windows sucks?) Anyways, I had to physically change it for it to work - no automated process worked.
  • andrzewi
Thanks Bill for the tip. I'll try that because I had the same problem as you mentioned: Sync didn't recognise my Magic on Widows 7.
  • Bill
can you post your results? I'd like to know if this helped - mainly because if multiple people are having this issues, HTC/Rogers should be indicating this as a possible problem. Thanks!
  • andrzewi
I did it and Sync is working now. I installed file (HTCSync.exe) recommended by Conte and at first it didn't work (problem with drivers). So, I tried second time and during repair I've got update with different file name (_HTC Tattoo_HTC Sync 2.0.18_HTCSync.exe). After restarting computer Sync connected and works. It is like WOW because I didn't expected to be successful.
  • Steve
I'm impressed with the Sense UI in the new update, and performance and battery life seem to have improved over the previous 1.5 ROM.

Is anyone else having a problem with the HTC Sense weather widget (and on the clock widget). For me the default (Current) weather is totaly wrong. The forecast shown for "Ottawa (Current)" is completely different (and wrong!) than when selecting Ottawa manually, problem is that the clock widget shows the Current (incorrect) forecast - very annoying.

Other than that, my HTC Magic feels like a whole new phone since the update, looking forward to the Android 2.1 update for even more goodness.
  • Scott
In case anyone was wondering, then instructions over at wiki.cyanogenmod.com don't work to gain root with the newest Rogers update. It errors with update failed due to incorrect product ID.
  • Bill
I updated my Magic on the weekend - no issues and everything seems to be working fine (Internet, Wifi, etc..) Love the new interface with the 7 home screens. I also upgraded my dream - not much changed there - same interface as before. Both phone are NOT rooted, so my experience is based on the normal phone settings.
Now, I sit patiently and wait for my 1.6 on my Magic... and wait... and wait.... and wait...
  • Lee
    Bill,
You won't be getting 1.6 on your Magic - apparently Rogers will be rolling out 2.1 later in the year.
  • Bill
    that works for me!
  • nostriluu
So, did anyone else notice that Rogers changed the theme of their "Revolution" campaign from Android phones to "ULTIMATE WEBPHONES" featuring Nokia, Win Mobile, Blackberry, whatever? The "open" "revolution" (their words) where you might be able to follow along on the leading edge is over, back to your regularly scheduled corporate terms.
  • RT
Has anyone listed what's in the Magic update compared with the Dream version?

The magic update is forty megabytes bigger... 108mb compared with 65mb
  • Darron
For those who have updated...is your Wi-Fi working? I can't seem to get mine connected. It was working fine before the update. And could someone elaborate on the data plan credit, How much will it be I don't understand.
  • Scott
My wifi is working. I wish my data worked though... grrr... frustrating.

If they don't give me a months worth of credit I will keep calling them until they do as it is stated pretty clearly that they will. This is frustrating!
  • Thomas
To customers who have a *custom* ROM (cyanogen or so), CALL ROGERS! I just talked with a Rogers agent and he said they receive A LOT of complaints. After some negotiation (I told him I was using Ubuntu, so no way for me to run the update anyway), he "refreshed" the device (I have no clue what it means). I removed the battery, started the Magic again, and got 3G back! I'll call to get some $ back for the service being down for a whole day :)
  • Raolin
    Thank Jebus!

I'm stilll waiting on hold to speak with someone at Rogers but I'm in the same predicament that you were formerly in. I'm running Ubuntu and my Magic is rooted, I was hoping Linux would be my way out of running the silly Rogers update and thanks to your intrepid blazing of unknown territory I know now I won't be needing to :)

    Thanks for the good news!
  • Thomas
Ah ah... got $1 on my next bill. Not worth calling!

Checked the connection on my rooted Dream this morning and it works! Both 3G and EDGE seems to be doing fine. Still waiting for my Magic to arrive from Rogers, the only problem is that it has be almost 2 weeks since I upgraded to it. I really hope that it comes prepackaged with the Sense UI since I had to wait this long for it, and if not, Rogers is in for a FURY OF PAIN
  • Scott
yup, my 3G is down now on my rooted Dream :(
  • Dan
    Yep, mine too. :(
  • Hi There. Just wanted to jump in to clarify one point. Data will not be disabled until tomorrow - Sunday, January 24 - at 6am for those who have not updated their device with the 911 fix. With safety being the highest priority, this was a necessary step to ensure 911 calls will complete on all devices.

If you are currently having issues, I suggest you call Technical Support.
  • Jag
So, what happens for users with rooted phones? The 911 issue has already been addressed for those users running custom roms (namely Cyanogenmod). How do I get the 3G data running again?
  • darron
I just installed this update on my rooted htc magic. It seems a bit faster than the myhero sense ui version although there is no voice search. Rogers has there stupid and worthless apps that came with the original ROM and there is 1 or 2 new wallpapers. But what i like about this is that the timestamp issue is fixed unlike the rooted ROM's.
  • Scott
Rogers fixed the time stamp issue back in August: http://www.androidincanada.ca/news/update-roger...

All the rooted ROM's that I've used have not had the time stamp issue.
  • thesniperz
most of the hero roms has the timestamp issue...
    which rom are u using?
  • Scott
Ah, I haven't used any Hero ROMs. I used CyanogenMod for a while, now I'm using xRom 2.1 (or something like that) and a smattering of others inbetween.
  • thesniperz
i meant Sense Roms (well that's the same.. hehehe)..
yeah only the Sense Roms had the timestamp issues, not the vanilla Android. :D

Just got off the phone with Rogers and apparently this update will put any rooted users back to 1.5. Now, whether or not you'll be able to root again after the update, I'm not sure. But this is complete trash in my opinion. We're being forced to go back to 1.5 or else we can't use our phones for data? WTF???? This is almost strike three for me with Rogers.
  • Scott
As I said above, I'm going to wait to see what the result is tomorrow before I run the update. It all depends on how Rogers blocks the data, if it is by account, or if they somehow do a check to see if those users with dreams are running there software or not. If they do the latter, then those of us with rooted dreams will have no issue. If they just temporarily block data for anyone that has a dream/magic registered on there account, then maybe after 24hours it will just revert back. Either way, I'm going to wait it out as I have wifi access for most of the next 48hours, so we shall see what happens. 3G is still currently working without a hitch.
  • Dan B
I'm on a rooted magic and still have full internet access on both wifi and 3G.
  • No such luck on the Dream. They disabled 3G net access even though I was running Cyanogen. http://www.jukie.net/~bart/blog/rogers-killed-m...

My phone isn't currently rooted, but since this update will wipe the phone, I figure this might be a good time to root the phone anyways. So I'm curious whether anyone can say whether this update will make it harder to root the phone. Also, since internet access is disabled until this update is done, is there any chance that if the phone is rooted in the future, I would lose internet access??
  • Scott
I'm not sure if it will be harder to root or not. I'm guessing that it will make some changes though that might. I currently have a rooted Dream and I'm going to wait until tomorrow to see if my 3G dies or not, and see if it comes back on before I run the update.

I do plan to update on my free Magic, and maybe contemplate attempting to root it after, depends on how long it takes for the 2.1 update..
  • Scott
Damn! 11:30am Vancouver time, my 3G stopped. Hmmm... now do I wait 24hours and see if it comes back before I update? or update anyway?
  • thesniperz
yes, i'm pretty sure it will be harder to get as it will come with a perfected spl.. just like the old firmware update (timestamp fix).. but after a couple of days, it was rooted..

as long as XDA developers are here, no need to worry for rooting.. there's always a way.. :D
  • darron
i rooted my phone so do i need to unroot before i install this update?
  • Scott
Best answer is to try it and find out (let me know if you do or not so I know if I have to with mine). I'm guessing anyone with a Cyanogen mod of some sort doesn't have to worry about the 911 issues as my research is showing that he discovered it months ago and fixed it. Is it still worth doing the update? Maybe.
  • AndrewOttawa
FYI - this ROM 'fix' killed my 3G data access on a brand new Magic. 2 days old then this patch comes along! Ha! I'm on Fido and have NO idea when data will be back. They say '24 hours' but we'll see.

FWIW the new - Sense UI DOES have multi-touch. 5 home screens (instead of 3) And the OTA upgrade gadget is in there for when 2.1 is ready. Facebook contact integration is sweet too.

This update includes the Sense UI!

I have just finished installing it and I'm rediscovering my Magic. I'm hoping RerWare MyBackup Pro, which I had to purchase in the process, will restore everything correctly.

I just don't see how an average user is supposed to do this, though, especially one who doesn't speak English.
    ----

I think you're missing the point of having an "android" phone.

Enjoy your 30 minutes discovering HTC's proprietary extensions while real updates are delayed... :)
  • Scott
Hmmm... this will probably mess up my root on the Dream. Excited to gain the Sense UI on the Magic. Well, I guess I will update the Dream anyway, just to be safe, hopefully I will be able to re-root if I decide that I want to. If anyone has more info, please let me know.
