Yup, that time of the week folks… how’s Android doing in the courts? Lots of back and forth this week, and it gets pretty ‘legalese’ on us!
What? Google and Apple on the same side? Even after the schism with Steve? Apparently it’s because PanoMap is suing Google over it’s use of StreetView, which Apple also uses in its Maps it’s facing a suit as well.
Apparently PanoMaps has a patent on viewing panoramic photos.. which is funny – when you go to Panomaps.com the super simple looking website has a map that says “Powered by Google Maps”. Hrmm… I wonder what will happen to it when Google takes offense.
Germany, the land of weird legal confusion. So with the back and forth with Moto and Apple on the 3G patent and cloud services… this looks to be just a way for Apple to ‘stay in the game’ while they look for a way out. Not so sure it’s a ‘huge victory’ myself…
In the end I don’t think Motorola (ie. Google) want Apple out of the game, I think this was just a nice ‘eff you’ move in this legal dance of chess they’re playing with each other.
Funny to point out that Apple has suggested a licensing arrangement, but doesn’t suggest a pricing. Apple paying Google…? ouch… take that Steve. (too soon?)
Okay, so this isn’t litigation… but I’m sure somebody’s whetting their chops waiting to pounce on it (besides isn’t that what all these companies do nowadays, just wait for somebody else to innovate and then try to sue them for a buck?). But it looks extremely interesting. Just like last week’s filing for the search gestures! We’re another step closer to the Minority Report UI.
Remember what I said about back and forth? Samsung loses a piece of their lawsuit action and Apple loses 2 of theirs. Am I the only one who’s seeing these things as becoming immensely ridiculous?
Seriously… Germany, somebody… slap all these folks upside the head and dismiss all the cases. What if we were to get a moratorium on patent cases for a year… what would that do? I think it could be good!
I know… you’re saying, “didn’t Motorola just win a case against Apple (even though it’s temporarily suspended)?” The theme of the week is “back and forth”.
This injuction is in regards to photo management on the device. Apparently scrolling from one photo to the next is an Apple only thing… hmm, and they only went after Motorola for that eh? Then it gets weirder…
Today’s ruling in Munich, Germany on the patent litigation brought by Apple concerns a software feature associated with performing certain functions when viewing photos in a ‘zoomed in’ mode on mobile devices. We note that the Court ruled that performing the functions in a ‘zoomed out’ mode does not infringe on this patent. We expect no impact to supply or future sales as we have already implemented a new way to view photos on our products that does not interfere with the user experience.
So, it only deals with “zoomed in” animations… smh
Okay, so enough of all this for now. Thanks for listening to me ramble. Let’s hear how you saw things this past week in the comments?
What do you prefer? Injunctions or licensing?
