Motorola i1 Coming To Telus “This Fall”, Airtel To Follow Soon

Rumours have been flying around in the past couple of days but we finally have some conformation. Seems like Motorola went ahead and put the i1 on their Canadian site a few days ago meaning that this phone is probably just around the corner now.

It’s got a 3.1-inch touchscreen, 5MP camera and push-to-talk features. Motorola is touting this as the first Android phone to have push-to-talk. We also get the standard bluetooth, Wifi and GPS. Oh, and get ready for it, Android 1.5.

Seriously? it’s JUST as easy to ship a phone running 2.1. I say the more Android phones the better but when you’re shipping a phone with 1.5 now, it’s just a little unfair to the consumer in my opinion. The phone is quite capable of being a decent handset hardware wise and the push-to-talk is certainly very unique.

Either way, Telus has said this is coming later in the fall. Airtel should release it within a few weeks as well. In terms of pricing, Airtel is gonna be selling it for $399 with no contract. Who’s up for this?

1.5 what a joke at this point with Motorola’s track record in updating there phones, I would not put a finger on this thing.

Speaking as an owner of a Motorola DEXT; which is a great phone, but Motorola has yet to update it….

I think Motorola is trying to get the tradesmen/builders/contractors market. I worked in the trades for a while and was given a Motorola phone that had push-to-talk. It was at least a few years old already at the time, but was one of the very few phones that had the feature. This i1 seems like a suitable replacement to keep that market. It doesn’t have to be the best out there. Throw in some cheap appealing features and you’re set.

Shipping with 1.5 in late 2010 is just plain laughable.. though this phone is clearly targeted at the sort of folks who just really don’t care what version of firmware/software their phone is running, it still doesn’t bode well for android as a whole when developers are going to be expected to support everything from 1.5 to 2.x (..or even 3.x?) at the same time. Thanks but no thanks moto.

We will likely pick up one of these phones to try out for our Mike users, simply because, even with 1.5, it’s still way better than the choices provided with the rest of the Telus Mike phones. In the push to talk market, Motorola competes against, well, mostly itself, so no sense rushing to market with something really good. It only has to be a little better it seems. Some of our Mike users that don’t absolutely need to use Mike service are bailing out and switching to our non-Mike corporate plan just to get access to decent handsets.
