ICS Wishlist on ICS’eve
So here we are on the eve of the big event. What I have called ICS’eve.
We’ve seen the statue arrive at the Googleplex [as a math minor, I just love that term... 1 with a googol zeros].
So, with the delay of what was supposed to be released on the 14th – Sammy and Google have decided to unveil tomorrow [October 19th]. ICE CREAM SANDWICH. You gotta love their flair for naming OS’s.
ICS is to be the glue that melds together the fragmented OS’s of honeycomb and gingerbread [i.e. phone and tablet]. So what do you think you’ll see in ICS? We’ve seen some pretty sick mock-ups and whatnot so far, but nothing quite like real thing to really make our dreams come true.
Having used both gingerbread and honeycomb, here’s a list of the items I’m looking forward to in my next phone [I'm calling it now, my next phone will be ICS].
- Running app multi-tasking: Something that I can glance at and see what apps are running, and where they are as they were last run [the app icon just isn't enough anymore]
- Notification centre instead of a shade [shades are becoming passe now that iOS is trying to copy us (done in my best hipster accent)]. But somewhere where all your notifications ‘collect’ and not just build up and jumble. From this area you should be able to get into the nitty gritty of the phone should you need.
- Bookmark syncing – but one that works. Mine don’t quite fully sync entirely – and I’ve never been able to figure out why
- Consistent look/feel of gApps on either system [obviously]
- Scalable screen / widget size. I’m meaning that if I want to make a homescreen 4×4 or 8×8 I can scale the size of the icons and widgets accordingly. After a few weeks on my tablet I’m seeing the huge limitation of 4×4 screens. And most of what I’ve seen that changes that really makes the icons/widgets look gross and overlappy.
Now aside from that… what else do I hope to see in ICS?
- photo editing built in – we hear rumours that the next gallery app will have a built in photo editing capability. Nice
- better gMail app. Formatting, zooming, saving any attachments you want
- Google Voice for Canada… okay, long shot I know. But I can hope… But it would be nice to be able to use that long distance calling option we have in gMail available to the phones and tablets [even without a GV account]
There’s not much that I can see that Google can do to make the core any better, and that which they could, there are a slew of apps out there that will do it for us.
What do you think ICS should have? What should we leave out for our buddy Andy as he drops by with some ICS goodness? milk and cookies [kinda cannibalistic]
Oh, and here’s my shameless plug for more space!
