How To Get Data Working on Unlocked Androids.

If you have a carrier locked phone that you’ve unlocked yourself or paid to have unlock codes sent to your email, you may have noticed your Android might have troubles picking up data off the new carrier. This is because you are trying to use your phone on a network that the phone was not made to work with. So you may need to change the APN settings yourself to get your 3G data working again.

To change your APN settings on your Android, do the following:
Go to Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Access Point Names > Hit the menu button and select “New APN” In this next screen you enter the information that goes with the carrier you are trying to connect to.

Source of Rogers/Fido APN is from Rogers Redboard. Telus/Bell APN is From Google.

Retired from AiC, You can now find me at AndroidColiseum.com

  • I can confirm that this works for EDGE only – on Rogers.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S “Vibrant” from T-Mobile and all I can get is EDGE network. I’m not complaining, it’s better than nothing. I just replaced an iPhone 3GS, loving the Android phone.

    • Tom Gray

are you sure it’s not your android not being able to use Rogers 3G signal? Sometimes other carrier phones are not compatible with other 3G signals due to the signal being a different type.
I just double checked the APN settings to my Nexus S on rogers and they are exactly as posted above

      • Yeah I’m guessing that’s the case. It sucks that I have 2 more years of EDGE, but again, I can’t complain. Anything is better than the iPhone 3gs. Thanks for the advice, Tom.

        • Tom Gray

No problem, I’m glad I was able to help a bit.

          • I’m having the same problem using an unlocked T-Mobile Sidekick 4G on Fido, I can only get Edge signal. As far as I can see Fido and T-Mobile both use 1900Mhz signal so I shouldn’t get issues (part of the reason why I got a t-mobile handset is that fido roams to T-Mobile in the states and I assumed this would help with compatibility).

            Resolved, my error.

This is fine for Telus on my N1, but the 74.49.0.18 proxy server does not properly handle HTTPS websites.  I’ve disabled the proxy server (blank) and port (blank), and then everything works as expected.

    hello,
I just bought the htc panache from Mobilicity and I am not getting a constant connection. This is due to where I live.
So my question is, will this phone work completely on a telus network? I have not unlocked the phone yet because I am not able to get a real answer from anyone. If you or anyone has some feedback, please I would love to hear it. I do love the phone, but am regretting having bought it so quickly without investigating everything first.

    Thanks,

So, I have a blackberry plan from 2011 and it allows me to have unlimited social networking and such. But when I bought an unlocked Nexus S from somebody, the data wasn’t working. I put in the APN settings for Rogers but it still doesn’t working even if I put Data roaming on. I called the Rogers rep. and they said that its because I have a blackberry plan other phones phones cannot use the social networking feature.

I have an AT&T Unlocked ZTE 9800. I’ve used the recommended APN settings from Fido however I cannot get mms or internet to work. I have used…

    LTEMOBILE.APN
MMS (Picture & Video Messaging Settings):
    MMSC: http://mms.fido.ca
    MMS Proxy: 205.151.11.13
    MMS Port: 80

For Authentication Type I have used “*” and “internet + mms” to no avail.

    Can you provide any guidance?

    Thank you.

I am with Rogers and just bought an S4 from the US thats unlocked (was with sprint) … I tried putting in the APN settings from the Rogers website, those from here and from other websites but NOTHING is making my data work … every time a message appears saying ‘lte esm 33 emm x’. I have tried rebooting my phone, taking in and out my sim card, but I still have no data. What can I do? thank you!

    • Tim

I don’t think the Sprint version of the S4 supports the networks that we have in Canada. So it may not work at all, sorry!

    • Pearlene Checkosis
