Gingerbread (2.3.3.) for the Captivate

I usually don’t like to re-hash a post another has done, but it’s hard not to for this case.

2.3 for the Captivate has been something I’ve been waiting for for some time. I followed all the leaks and tweets since it was announced. Sure enough, Rogers was the last Canadian carrier to apply the update for the Galaxy line, and they even missed their own deadline by 2 days… but it’s here.

Updating was a snap. Unfortunately it was through Kies only, but it really was simple:

  • Plug in usb
  • Choose “firmware” option on the phone
  • the computer should load up kies [if not start it up]
  • It will then tell you the firmware needs to be updated on your phone
  • click ‘ok’
  • wait
  • …wait some more

  • After that the phone should reboot and then there you are! Rebooted into Gingerbread.

So far I haven’t noticed a lot of difference from the Froyo to Gingerbread. The notifications are all greyscale… the battery is a fair bit better! Facebook now imports contacts! Other than that, nothing noticeable by my account.

I was hoping for a better camera / gallery app. I notice my pictures in the gallery never come to ‘full resolution’ and things still stay a bit fuzzy when I zoom in. Can’t have it all I guess.

Getting the update was a great upturn to a near week of being sick. Now I have the weekend to recuperate and Gingerbread to help occupy the time. I was THIS close to rooting and putting Cyanogen on. Might still as 2.3.3 isn’t ‘up to date’ either.

Anyone else run the update and want to share their story?

What will happen to the people who have no PC (Personal Computer)  or laptop (PC)?

all of you guys know how to make this phone a brick or how to do changes in ‘bloatware’ (which i don’t know what it means), and also you know all about CMT7 or something like that. What it is and how new person can recognize those special codes?

THIS UPDATE IS A BIG NONSENSE!!!

No problems updating for me. Minor cosmetic changes but haven’t been running long enough to test batery life. Still love this phone!

External SD failed after the update. Seem like many people having this issue with Gingerbread not reading external SD after update.

The update of my Captivate worked well once I managed to get Kies Installed so that it would not crash every time I tried to perform the update. I finally had to rebuild a Windows workstation with Windows 7 (very vanilla configuration). I removed my External SD before I performed the update (too much weirdness with USB mounting in the past). Everything is working good now. Have not tried the External SD yet.

Anyone else notice their phone is suddenly talking about using different radio bands?  Instead of Edge and HPSA, now it references GSM and WCDMA – Wtf?

Yeah!  I’ve been tweeting with Rogers about that… still get HSPA coverage…
I figure it’s a ‘copy/paste’ error from Bell’s ROM, [i.e. the text looks the same] but the PRLs are appropriate

Finally I’ve got the 2.3.3. Somehow, because under beer influence it was done today. It works.
