Firefox Mobile has been making a lot of ground lately with the most recent release of their browser for the Maemo platform. The next step is Android. It has been known for some time that Firefox was making its way to Android but a date or time frame had never been defined.
Well, that unknown time frame is about to change.
Mozilla’s VP of Mobile, Jay Sullivan, and Tech Radar, were having a talk recently and Sullivan went on record saying that Firefox for Android should be released “late this year”. When asked why the release is not any sooner, Sullivan explained that Android only supports Java development where Firefox supports C/C++. When Google added native C/C++ support back in June 2009, Firefox development could finally begin.
Sullivan also spoke of other platforms such as a Windows Mobile version of Firefox, which is currently in Alpha and may make a debut in the new Windows Phone 7 Series operating system.
