Dell Streak On Sale August 13 In The U.S.

The big news in the Android world today is the Dell Streak getting a release date for AT&T. It’s a five inch android device with lots of features, running Android 1.6. A lot of people question whether it’s a tablet or a smartphone due to its size (I think anything that makes calls is a phone.)

The phone goes on sale for $299 on a two-year contract with AT&T or $549 with no term. As far as i know, this is the largest screen size on an Android device that has the official Android Marketplace on it. It may be a little hard to fit it in a front jean pocket but to have something like this with you all the time is a really exciting idea to me.

We’re still waiting for phones with larger 4.3 inch screens to show Canada some love but already seeing the gorgeous 4 inch Super AMOLED Samsung Galaxy S popping up here and there. I can’t wait to get my hands on these displays (sorry Steve Jobs, some of us DO like screens bigger than 3.5 inches.)

The Android Marketplace integration means you get all the apps in the store but Dell has also said Android 2.1 with 720p recording is coming in the near future which would bring the phone up to date with the competition. Hopefully the 2.2 Froyo update will follow shortly after, right Dell?

Do you think we’re ever gonna see this in Canada? Would you carry something this big for day to day use? Is it really a smartphone or a tablet?

    Funny how fast we all wanna upgrade our smart phones these days. The rapid releases are truly exciting

    Shipping with 1.6 is disappointing, I don't care how snazzy the UI is. Otherwise it looks pretty nice, not sure I could handle a device that large for daily use, but having never used one it's hard to say. Personally I think about 4″ is the sweet spot for smartphones.

    Let's hope Dell gets on those software updates quick. We all know Gingerbread 3.0 is just waiting around the corner.

    I wonder if we'll see the Evo 4G ever come to Canada. Since the phone uses WiMax for the 4G service, I haven't heard any of our carriers being behind that technology. They all favour LTE due to its speed advantage.

    It IS exciting, but it sure makes for a tough choice on which phone to go with.

    That's why I went with a Nexus One because Google would update it for sure first. But who knows now if Google will keep upgrading it first after the next version 3.0

    Isn't the HTC Desire HD supposed to be the 'so called' EVO for the rest of the world? Without a front camera though, so I think I'll pass. I'll upgrade my nexus one when Google stops upgrading it.

    The Desire HD admittedly sounds exciting although we don't have that much detail on it. I wonder how long Google will update the Nexus for and as much i hope i'm wrong, i don't think we'll ever see a Nexus Two

    very tough choice. I believe you should pick a phone, keep it in good condition and when you think you're due for an upgrade, sell it and buy the new phone
