Confirmed: AT&T Dell Streak Will Be SIM-locked, Even Off-Contract
We talked about the Dell Streak a few days ago and if you thought you could buy the no-term phone off AT&T and bring that baby over the border to Canada, well… you can’t. Dell’s cheif blogger Lionel Menchaca confirmed today via Twitter that the device will be SIM-locked to AT&T, even if you don’t sign a contract.
Pretty disappointing news but it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to me. Other than the Nexus One which came factory unlocked no matter how you got it, cellphones sold in North America are tied to the carrier you buy them from. Dell does however sell the Streak unlocked in the UK for £449 and did promise to sell an unlocked Streak in the US for $500 about two months ago. So you can either try your luck on eBay now or wait to see how this all might pan out.
