BREAKING: Rogers 6GB Data Plan Is BACK!

by Billy on June 2nd, 2009

Starting June 2, 2009, any activation as a new customer or upgrade to the HTC Dream or HTC Magic, is automatically eligible for the $30 6GB Smartphone Data Plan! This plan runs on a 3 year contract and must be tied to another select voice plan. So it is select Voice Plan + 6GB Data plan under a 3 year contract.

The Details

  • Price: $30 per month
  • Data included per month: 6GB
  • Time frame: June 2, 2009 to July 1, 2009 (expires on July 1, 2009)
  • Overages: 50¢/MB for the first 60MB, then 3¢/MB thereafter
  • Contract Term: Available on 3 year service agreement only or 3 year renewals
  • Device support: Android Smartphones only: HTC Magic and HTC Dream

With the 6GB data plan and a select Voice plan or a bundled Voice/Data plan, both the HTC Dream and Magic will run $149.99 on a 3 year term.

The 6GB Data plan is available through all of June, so no need to rush because Rogers Stores are definitely going to be sold out of HTC devices for a few days. I would check the stores next week and hook everything up then!

I visited my local rogers wireless store to see if they had a demo model of the dream so that I could verify that it is indeed running 1.5/cupcake (I am interested in knowing if it has stereo bluetooth support), however there were no demo units to play with.

Can someone with the rogers htc dream/magic verify that their phone supports stereo bluetooth (A2DP and AVCRP profiles), preferably with a story of a successful pairing with a car or headset?

    Thanks in advance!

Anyone else who got a new Magic/Dream from Rogers having trouble with the SMS timestamps being off?
It's a frequent problem with imported HTC phones on the Rogers network, but I got a Dream from Rogers today and I'm having that problem. Imported Dreams from T-Mobile had the problem too, but apparently the upgrade to v1.5 of the Android firmware fixed it. The ones from Roger are already upgraded so that can't be the fix.

And yes, I have checked my time settings. It's not a matter of time settings, but a matter of how Rogers sends time stamp data and how the phone reacts to it that is the problem.

    Thanks!

    The 6gb plan sold me.

I picked up the Magic at a Rogers kiosk at the local mall where they had 10 of each phone. Despite getting there at 3:30 I was the first they had asking about them. I guess the geeks are all going to FutureShop.

I got the $30 voice plan, $30 6gb data plan, and $12 extra's. Their computer wouldn't let them do it, so it had to be phoned in. The phone was $150 with 3 yr contract

So far I'm finding it mostly good, but with a few smaller gotcha's mostly around the interface behaving differently between screens and apps. YouTube videos don't use the entire screen...

Be sure to download the SkyMap app, as it's an instant crowd pleaser.

Rogers has a bunch of their own links to where I think they expect you to pay for ringtones etc... ha!

I was able to easily install both marketplace and non-marketplace apps. NOTE: THERE ARE NO PAID APPS AVAILABLE YET.

Several apps aren't Magic friendly due to the lack of a keyboard.

The camera worked ok taking pics and video, but it's nothing to write to your mother about.

Salesperson told me that as long as I didn't talk more than 30mins I could return it within 30 days, so I haven't made a call yet.

The 6gb plan isn't in their plan section on the website...

Navigating through all of Roger's plans is a royal pain in the butt. The combo value plans currently don't trigger the phone savings, even on a 3 year contract.

Anyhow, has anyone got their phones up and running yet? I am especially curious to hear about the Canadian Android Market and if there are differences from its US counterpart. Also... has anyone tested installing an application not from the market?

  • It's there if you go through the purchasing process and select the individual data plan.

Additionally, you can call them. I just placed an order for mine and told them to give me that data plan - no problems (yet - we'll see come billing time).

I went trough all the data plans and options and it wasn't there for me.

I don't have any reason not to believe they will offer it but an official source from Rogers would be nice when posting "breaking news".
  • I received an email from a Rogers representative confirming the 6GB plan. Will add it to the post.

    Hi Bruno.

I cannot get into the intricacies of official Rogers source vs not, but I can confidently speak in the name of Rogers, which why this post, as well as many others, are 100% authentic.
I don't wait for people to contact me claiming they are "sources" like other websites do.
  • Billy
You must be new in these parts.
I AM your official Rogers source and whether you believe that or not, makes no difference to me.

In any case, I will spare you the humiliation and link you to the area of the site in which it has now been updated. However, its up to you to READ:

    The BC Rogers Site: http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-plan...

Thanks for the links. I'm sorry if my comments may have sounded offensive but when you made that post you had a source, you're not making this up so why not tell where you got that info whatever it was by an email, phone or anything.

And come on, your not an "official" Rogers source, you can't speak in the name of Rogers unless you want to get sued.

Anyways, thanks for this website, I'm sure I wasn't the only one who was waiting for Android.
