Bell Releases Samung Galaxy S Vibrant; Virgin Mobile To Follow

Earlier this week, Bell updated their website to reveal pricing and a release date for their next Android-powered handset; the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant. The device has been officially released as of Friday, August 6 and is priced at $149.95 on a 3-year agreement ($499.95 without agreement).

The device features Android 2.1 and a new 4-inch Super AMOLED display, the latter of which has been promoted heavily by Bell. The Galaxy S Vibrant further features a 720p HD video camera and Samsung’s “Social Hub” to synchronize social media such emails, Facebook, Twitter and calendars into one integrated display.

Originally thought to be exclusive to Bell, the device may also be making its way to Virgin Mobile, a sub-brand of Bell Mobility.

The Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant has shown up in the internal Virgin Mobile training systems as a device that sales representatives are to familiarize themselves with. No information on pricing or an official release date, but Bell and Virgin have the tendency to release the same phones at the same time.

I played with one yesterday at a wireless wave booth and completely love it. I did not discover any GPS issues or OS lags like they're being reported all over the web. I compared to the iPhone4 and man it's a hard call which one I prefer. Oh well…I still have two weeks until the Captivate comes out on Rogers to decide between the two powerhouses!

Any idea when the Android 2.2 update will come out for this?

September-October. At least that's when the States are supposed to get it. We're gonna have to wait for Rogers or Bell.

pick up one yesterday. WOW ! Sync. My Google account , gmail, calender, contacts, Twitter. Great so far! No lag. Nav works fine. loaded drivers in windows so it see the storage on the phone like it was a drive. Can copy , move file easy . Really enjoying it so far. Will post again in a week.

No GPS issues at all eh? Still not too sure about that. Played with one yesterday. Didn't have a problem either. They're sweet phones

Gah, if the iPhone 4 continues to have stock problems for much longer, I'll be awfully tempted. I haven't really seen a solid comparison between the camera (for stills and video both) on the iPhone 4 and Galaxy S. How do they compare? The camera is a big reason for wanting an iPhone 4, along with the apps. But Google's awesome GPS software, along with the Android's hackability and the Galaxy S's larger screen is very tempting.

From what I’ve seen with my own eyes the Galaxy S is superior in both terms of front and rear facing camera quality, and pretty much every other category. The screen resolution on the iPhone 4 is superior, but, ironically, the SAMOLED screen on the Galaxy S is actually better, in almost every way.

SAMOLED > Slightly higher resolution LCD

The camera's not quite as crisp as the one on the iPhone. Also I don't think it's got an LED flash. So if you're looking for camera performance I suppose the iPhone is the way to go. The Android market is rapidly groing….give it a year or even less it's caught up to the app store. The screen quality between the i4 and the vibrant is a draw. Both have advantages in certain areas over each other. However, since I've seen the 4″ screen my iphone 3g's screen looks REALLY small. Just google some reviews.

I took a look at the Galaxy S and the Telus Desire on Friday. I ended up buying the Desire as the price was better and the phone felt a lot more solid. Screen quality was definitely there with the Galaxy S, but the feel of the phone was the deciding factor for me.

When is it slated to be released?

How is Galaxy S compare to Roger's captivate?
I'm ready to get a new contract but can't decide where to go to…
Any below $50 monthly contract promos are you guys aware of out of those big 4s?

Here is a review, I bought the Galaxy S on Friday from Bell. The screen is bigger, but defiantly isn't higher resolution than the iPhone4. Pictures and text are way more pixelated on the Galaxy S. However, it is a larger screen so you do not need to zoom in as much. It is also way lighter than an iPhone4 which I liked.

I tried using my Galaxy S with CP, and the posts are not very clear compared to the iPhone4. Also, I found the Galaxy S to be the buggiest phone I have ever used. Has anyone tried to sync music with it? I couldn't even get WinXP to recognize the phone properly (after 2 support calls to Bell, and 2 days of trying via Android Forms).

I ended up returning it Sunday. Good riddance, that phone is all sizzle, no steak. I totally recommend against buying it, I mean it is impossible/very hard to sync music with the thing, what does that tell you?

Thanks for the review. That's pretty much what I've been reading on the forums about this phone. Bad GPS, laggy UI, does not play nice with computers and battery issues.

Bell released Froyo for Galaxy S Vibrant users today, downloadable via Kies. Did it, done it, works much faster and ActiveSync email integration finally works well.
