Augmented Reality Gets More Awesome with Augmented Traffic Views
Earlier last week we reported about the introduction of Layar into Canada, the augmented reality application for Android.
As a recap, Layar uses the camera on your Android device to display real time digital information over top of what you see through the camera lens. In other words, on top of the camera screen that you are looking at is a layer of 3D location-based content that is completely interactive.
So for example, using your device camera, Layar can show you popular locations such as restaurants, stores, local city information and many other results all through a 3D layer overlaid on your live camera screen.
Well the latest innovation in the augmented reality space comes in the form of a new application called “Augmented Traffic Views”.

Augmented Traffic Views
Augmented Traffic Views essentially acts exactly as Layar does except that its primary focus is traffic flows. The app allows you to view live Toronto Traffic Control cameras and maps based on your location using GPS and the direction that you are facing.
When you tap one of the overlaid traffic cameras on your screen, the image from the selected traffic camera is shown. As you move, the traffic cameras seen on your device through augmented reality also move. Another really neat feature is the ability to add your own points of interest to be viewed through the augmented reality mode.
However, the app does not stop there. Additional features include text to speech, audible alerts, proximity alerts (red light cameras, etc) and predictive tracking that will show you traffic camera images as you are driving.
Currently the app only covers Toronto with no word of any further city expansion but I’m hoping it makes its way West to Vancouver.
Augmented Traffic Views is available on the Android Marketplace in August for Free.
