I've heard that basic functionality has been compromised on the G1:

- not receiving phone calls
- not receiving e-mails/messages in a timely fashion
- randomly repeatedly failing on sending IMs and text messages
- randomly hanging all over the place (e.g. changing songs in media player).

I don't personally know anyone who has one of these phones in the US, so make what you will of this second generation hearsay.

Interesting - I never heard any horror stories, just rave reviews. What kinds of problems have there been?

You're right, though, Rogers is missing out on a golden opportunity to drum up business by highlighting Android phones. Everyone and their uncle's best friend's dog's chewtoy know about the iPhone, and with competition coming to them for who offers it, they would do well to showcase the new technology and what it has that the iPhone doesn't, or at least how they compare in some way...

I'm usually as ready as the next guy to criticize Rogers, but from what I've read, the 1.6 upgrade was disastrous for many G1 (Dream) and myTouch 3G (Magic) users on T-Mobile. So, maybe Rogers actually did a reasonable job of testing and are holding back the update until the issues are worked out.

What I want to know: why hasn't Rogers announced any new Android offerings yet? You'd think that with Bell and Telus getting the iPhone, they'd want to have some desirable exclusives this holiday season. My three-year contract with Telus expires in a few weeks, and new Android handset announcements over the next couple of months will no doubt determine where I take my business.

yes, that's why i hate Rogers for this... maybe HTC too, as HTC makes the customization for Rogers don't they?
any experiences on other companies? Telus or Bell for updating their phones? If they're better in releasing updates, maybe i'll get one of the Android phones they'll be releasing.
If they don't release 1.6 before the end of November, i'll root my Magic and put in Cyanogen or something..

Rogers is going to wait and wait and wait... and they will lose customers and potential customers because they continue to wait. 1.6 may come to Rogers phones when the rest of the world has 2.0 - maybe! I mean, look at their record so far. Any updates that come to any other part of the planet are either lost in the Rogers ether, or come out MONTHS behind.

T-Mobile has 1.6, Vodaphone in the UK has it, I think... There's a Brazilian version of the Magic with Sense, and I believe a chinese carrier just introduced it as well. I am just waiting for Cyanogen to see if there is a way of backing up the Google apps that came with the phone, then one way or the other I am going to Cyanogenmod for my Magic.

Like Rene said - "Way to drop the ball, Rogers!"
