Android 1.6 Spotted on T-Mobile; Is Rogers Next?

On September 15, we reported about the release of Android 1.6 SDK to the developer community. The official release noted that 1.6 would be running on devices as early as October 2009.

While that was great news, we were all left wondering when Rogers was going to adopt the new version and send out an update, whether Over-the-Air or as a downloadable file.

Well it seems that at least two people on T-Mobile in the USA have received the 1.6 upgrade OTA and are successfully running the new version.

As this point, it is a guessing game as to when Rogers will release such an update, and like I said, we have no idea whether it will be OTA (convenient) or an actual downloadable file. But whatever the case, it is good news to see that at least one wireless carrier and some customers are receiving the update.

I've just emailed both HTC and Rogers to when we'll be receiving the updates..
waiting for their response.. hopefully SOON!

I dont think it will be OTA.. (remember the last update for fixing the MMS timestamps?)
hopefully it will be OTA though..

I wish Rogers offered the update OTA… would be convenient. It's doubtful though… I just hope we get it soon.

Any news of the update from Rogers?

I'd asked question yesterday to technical support, but they don't even know there is a patch..

    Thx

Not sure where else to ask this.. I'm wondering if my Rogers Dream is defective. The data transfers over 3G and edge are just pitiful. I have done many comparisons with an iPhone 3G and often the iPhone will have finished the page before my device has even started – and sometimes mine just times out. When the iPhone has a strong signal, the Dream only has limited connectivity. Is this “normal”? I haven't done the recent updated yet, will it or any of the rooted distributions work better?

I gotta say that in many ways I like Android, and even the Dream's form factor, but there are so many problems I'm looking forward to jumping ship to something else.

Ok, there is something very strange about this site. Nobody actually realizes that the whole world has the Donut update to 1.6. If any of you actually had any sense, you would all be calling that idiot Roger & complaining to him. I bought a HTC Dream today & I`m stuck with 1.5 slapped with some crappy Rogers bloatware. Yet the rest of the world has already gotten OTA updates months ago! Rogers is a rip off. I called customer service & asked them about the Donut 1.6 update, the was confused. They don`t even know what this is. If everyone started to complain, they might actually do something about it.
