There have been many rumors expressing that Google will support Adobe’s Flash in the upcoming Android 2.2 update later this year. Earlier this week, PCWorld reported that Google had made public its intentions to support the Flash platform.
In a New York Times interview, Google VP of Engineering was quoted saying that Adobe’s Flash will receive official support on Android phones when Android 2.2 (Froyo) launches. Froyo, for those that are wondering, is Google’s latest code name for Android 2.2, otherwise known as Frozen Yogurt.
Now, furthering the release of Flash on Android, late last night Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch posted a brief note on the company’s blog titled “Moving Forward”. Among the words is a definitive release date for Flash on Android. It now seems that Adobe has plans to release Flash beginning June 2010. In May, during Google’s I/O conference, Adobe will deliver a Flash on Android preview.
We look forward to delivering Flash Player 10.1 for Android smartphones as a public preview at Google I/O in May, and then a general release in June. From that point on, an ever increasing number and variety of powerful, Flash-enabled devices will be arriving which we hope will provide a great landscape of choice.
Once again, details were not available on exactly which Android devices would receive Flash support or whether the Flash support is exclusive to Android 2.2 devices. While there is no mention of a specific release day for Flash on Android, June 2010 is pretty good in my books. Plus, we get to see a preview of it in May at the Google I/O conference!
