Update: I have personally tried this. Works on my GSM Galaxy Nexus running ICS 4.0.1 and 4.0.2.

APPLY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Superboot r3 - DOWNLOAD - MD5: c827e540aa0262adc2ded86a91c68492

The superboot image is also ‘insecure’, allowing you to use ‘adb remount’ as well as having full ADB root access to your device until such time as you reboot after running this process (it’s a non permanent ADB root as it’s a ‘fastboot boot’ and not a ‘fastboot flash’).

How to use Superboot – Windows, Linux and OSX

- Download the Superboot zip file above and extract to a directory

- Put your device in bootloader mode – Turn off the phone then turn on with the ‘volume up’ and ‘volume down’ buttons both pressed to enter the bootloader

Note: You may need to unlock the bootloader first, using “./fastboot-windows oem unlock” (or the appropriate version for your machine). Note that the OEM unlock sequence wipes your device.

- WINDOWS - double click “install-superboot-windows.bat”

- MAC - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type “chmod +x install-superboot-mac.sh’ followed by “./install-superboot-mac.sh”

- LINUX - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type “chmod +x install-superboot-linux.sh’ followed by “./install-superboot-linux.sh”

It’s just that easy.

I personally used the MAC method and it worked almost flawlessly. I had to repeat the process twice, as the first time gave me SuperUser, but did not grant permissions. After I did the process a second time, all was perfect. I used this method on the unlocked version of the Galaxy Nexus imported from the U.K. As stated previously. Unlocking your bootloader will wipe your device.

I am in no way a professional at this. I’m simply providing the guide that I personally used without issues. All credit and questions regarding this method should be directed to the original source, which can be found here

Let us know how it goes. Good luck and happy rooting!

Most of the time, torrents take a long time to download. I usually let them run during the night. Since torrents keep uploading even when you finished downloading them, I usually try not to keep them running too long after they’re done (even though I usually try to seed as much as I can). That’s one of the reasons why I usually don’t leave my house with torrents downloading on my computer : I don’t want to bust my monthly limit.

With uTorrent remote, you now have complete control over your torrents over your 3G or 4G connection. This simple app shows you the download progressions, and lets your pause, resume, or stop your downloads. Pretty cool, isn’t it? Unfortunately, this isn’t a BitTorrent client; you won’t be able to search and add new torrents to your list. Of course you have to use uTorrent on your computer in order for this to work.

If you have a carrier locked phone that you’ve unlocked yourself or paid to have unlock codes sent to your email, you may have noticed your Android might have troubles picking up data off the new carrier. This is because you are trying to use your phone on a network that the phone was not made to work with. So you may need to change the APN settings yourself to get your 3G data working again.

To change your APN settings on your Android, do the following:
Go to Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Access Point Names > Hit the menu button and select “New APN” In this next screen you enter the information that goes with the carrier you are trying to connect to.

Similar to iOS used by Apple’s iPhone or RIM’s BlackBerry OS, Android is a mobile operating system created by Google.

However, Google doesn’t directly create phones. They have collaborated with HTC to create the Nexus One and most recently with Samsung to create the Nexus S.

Most used for smartphones, there are also tablets and other media devices with the Android OS.

It is an open platform so any manufacturer can create an Android phone.

Basically, every mobile manufacturer out there does make an Android device, with the exception of Apple (makers of the iPhone), RIM (makers of the BlackBerry) and Nokia (who has thrown their hat in with Microsoft for the Windows phone).

Variety
This variety means you’re not limited to just one model of phone.

You can find an Android phone with the features that you want.

•	Full QWERTY keyboard
•	Touchscreens from 3 to 5 inches
•	OLEDw and LCD displays
•	Front and Back Cameras
•	FM Tuners

More Than Enough Apps
There are over 150,000 apps available in the Android Market.

From productivity apps, podcasts, and note apps to numerous music and movie players, even the popular Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds RIO, all of which are free for Android.

Most Android apps are free or low cost at around 99 cents.

Web Browsing and Email
Web Browser apps include popular Firefox and Chrome, and include Flash support. You have easy access to your gmail account and Google’s other cloud-based programs. You can also access any POP or IMAP email account from an Android phone.

What Next?
All mobile phone carriers have a selection of Android phones.

Look at our recent posts on new and upcoming Android phones and tablets to find the right one for you.

*This article has been adapted from Rogers monthly magazine, Connected.

Some sites try to force you to their “mobile optimized” site but that’s not what you always necessarily want. You can bypass this with just a few simple steps. It’s called changing your UAString or User Agent ID (But that wouldn’t make an exciting title now would it?)

Enter “about:debug” into the browser’s address bar.

Click your phone’s menu button.

Click the More icon.

Now Click Settings.

Scroll all the way to the bottom, locate UAString and click it.

From here you can pick Android, Desktop or even iPhone.

This worked for me on my Nexus One running stock 2.2 so your mileage may vary. The only issue with this method is that it’s not permanent and every once in a while you have to type in about:debug again to get your UAString back to what you picked.

One of my main uses for this has been Leo Laporte’s Twit Network. They have the most listened to netcasts/podcasts on the net and they run a video stream of live and re-run shows 24/7. But when you go to http://live.twit.tv/ on Android, you’re sent to the mobile website which has links for a live video stream, audio stream and app, all of which are only for the iPhone!

Since that page is basically a giant live flash stream, I guess they didn’t want to upset those iPhone users but guess what? I have Flash 10.1 on my Nexus One. Since they don’t provide an option to view the desktop site on the page, this is the method I use to bypass that.

Let me know if this works for you!

When Rogers decided to debut Android phones in Canada, most people got excited about the possibilities of Open-Sourced apps. However, there’s been one problem–Canadians can’t buy paid apps from Android Market yet. Why? Well, the answer isn’t very clear, but let’s take a look at what countries DO have paid apps.

According to the Android Market’s support page, here are the countries that are allowed to distribute free apps:

* Australia
* Austria
* Belgium
* Bulgaria
* Canada
* Czech Republic
* Denmark
* France
* Germany
* Greece
* Hong Kong
* Ireland
* Italy
* Japan
* Netherlands
* Norway
* Poland
* Portugal
* Singapore
* Spain
* Sweden
* Switzerland
* Taiwan
* United Kingdom
* United States

Now take a look at this special group of 8, the only countries allowed to distribute paid apps:

* Austria
* France
* Germany
* Italy
* Netherlands
* Spain
* United Kingdom
* United States

Canada is not on the paid apps list. When will Canadians get to download apps? We will never know and Google so far has been pretty mum about the issue.

How to Bypass this and Download Android Apps in Canada

There is one way to download apps from the Android Market in Canada. You can venture out at YOUR OWN RISK and “r00t” your Android phone. For full instructions on how to do this, follow the guide below that was posted at HowardForums:

First, setting up your PC (I’m going to assume you’re using windows for this) to work with Android in a debugging enviroment.

1. Get the latest Android SDK from here (http://developer.android.com/sdk/1.5_r2/index.html) and unzip it into a convienent directory (most people use C:\Android\, so I suggest you do the same). The result should be something along the lines of C:\Android\android-sdk-windows-1.5_r2\.

2. Set up your phone to work with debugging drivers. The method of doing so can be found here (http://developer.android.com/guide/…ing/device.html) in the “Setting up a Device for Development” section, steps 2 and 3. To test that it works properly, open up a command prompt and navigate to the tools directory (C:\Android\android-sdk-windows-1.5_r2\tools). Type into the prompt:

Code:

adb devices

If it returns your device and serial number, then you’re all set.

3. Lastly, grab fastboot.exe from here (http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html) and place it in the tools directory of the sdk.

Next up, rooting.

If the phone that you have is a HTC Dream (hardware keyboard), Haykuro on XDA has provided you with all the necessary files which you can grab here:

http://drop.io/ii4t2ax

Unzip all files into the tools directory of the SDK. The readme inside states the following (I would open a command prompt and navigate to the tools folder, as steps 2, and 6-8 are entered in the command prompt)

Quote:

From what I can tell, this is an all-in-one way of doing it, as the first part flashes a good hboot (SPL, essential for recovering Nandroid backups), and the second part flashes the rooted boot.img with a rooted recovery.img. If you follow this, then you should be all set. The easiest way to test if the device is rooted is to open another command prompt in the tools dir and type

Code:

If it returns that adab is already running in root, then you’re all set.

If the phone you have is an HTC Magic (no hardware keyboard), the method is pretty much the same. I modified Haykuro’s zip with files that were meant for the Magic. You can grab it here:

Once again, the above should be done at your own risk. Unless you’re willing to tamper with your Android phone, then you’ll just have to wait patiently for paid Android apps to arrive in Canada.

How to Setup T-Mobile G1 on EDGE on Rogers/Fido

Today we’re going to take a look at a quick tutorial on how to setup your T-Mobile G1 Android handset on Rogers/Fido. More important, we’re going to focus on how to get your EDGE connection working in Canada. The web is full of scattered resources on getting this working so I thought I’d create a post to help everyone out there.

As you may already know, the T-Mobile G1 is a quad band GSM phone (850/900/1800/1900) that has GPRS/EDGE capabilities, but it is only dual band (1700/2100Mhz) when it comes to UMTS/HSPA (also known as 3G). Rogers GSM only operates on 850/1900Mhz, so getting 3G to work in Canada is not possible!

So if you’re a heavy data user, you might want to reconsider using an unlocked T-Mobile G1 in Canada because you’ll be limited to EDGE. If you’re really craving 3G, I would stick to an iPhone 3G.

Tutorial on How to Setup your T-Mobile G1 on EDGE with Rogers/Fido

1. Go to Settings–>Wireless controls–>Mobile networks–>Access Point Names–>Press MENU–>select NEW APN

**Important Setup Notes**
- you will see the default T-Mobile APNs. Please delete them first before adding the following APNs for a trouble free setup.
- ensure that the first SIM card you pop into your T-Mobile G1 is the same SIM you use to setup EDGE. Users have had issues activating with an old SIM, then popping in NEW SIM cards later on.

2. Add the following information:
* Name: Rogers
* APN: internet.com
* Username: wapuser1
* Password: wap
* MCC: 302
* MNC: 72 (or try 720 with newer SIM cards)
3. Press Menu–>Save. EDGE should appear on your handset if you’re in an EDGE coverage area.
4. If you’re on Fido, setup a NEW APN and use these settings:
* Name: Fido
* APN: internet.fido.ca
* Username: fido
* Password: fido
* MCC: 302
* MNC: 37 (or 370 if you have a newer Fido SIM)

How to Setup MMS on T-Mobile G1 on Rogers/Fido

Here are some settings to get MMS working on your T-Mobile G1 phone.

* Name: Rogers MMS
* APN: media.com
* Username: media
* Password: mda01
* Server: 172.25.0.107 – or maybe this should be * – I’ve tried both
* MMSC: http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
* APN type: mms
* MMS Proxy: 10.128.1.69
* MMS Port: 80

Internet browsing, sending emails, video and SMS should work if you use the above settings. MMS should also work if you follow the above settings too. Please remember that you will NEED a smartphone data plan (Blackberry data plans will not work). So have fun enjoying your T-Mobile G1 in Canada!
