HTC Legend/Desire Android 2.2 Upgrade Coming Q3 2010

Here’s some fantastic news for HTC Legend/Desire owners!

If you purchased the HTC Legend from Bell or Virgin recently or will purchase the upcoming HTC Desire from Telus, all of the devices have the Android 2.2 update coming soon.

The news comes from a HTC representative who stated:

We are working hard with our partners to update the HTC Sense experience on Froyo and distribute it to our customers as fast as possible. We expect to release updates for several of our 2010 models including Desire, Legend and Wildfire beginning in Q3.

So it looks like the HTC Legend/Desire Android 2.2 update will be available, with an updated SenseUI, late Summer or Fall 2010. Hopefully everything goes to plan and there are no barriers from the carriers or “partners” that HTC is working with.

Bell To Launch Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant

Reports this week point to Bell launching the new Samsung Galaxy S “Vibrant”. The new Android-powered device will be hitting Bell later in July 2010.

The Galaxy S Vibrant will feature the following specs:

Android OS 2.1 (and upgradable to Android OS 2.2)

1GHz processor
5 megapixel HD video camera front facing camera

Recently, Bell has put up a splash page for the device where users can sign-up to receive more information about the Galaxy S Vibrant. Aside from the late July release time frame, no other release date information is available. Pricing is also to be announced.

Motorola Dext, Quench & Backflip May Receive Android 2.1 Update

Over the last few months, Telus, Rogers, and Bell each launched one of Motorola’s new Android-powered devices. Telus launched the Backflip, Rogers launched the Quench, and Bell launched the Dext.

Aside from having MOTOBLUR in common, each device also had Android 1.5. As many know, Android 1.5 severely limits a device’s potential and is already an obsolete operating system. Well, there is some good news from Motorola on the OS front.

Motorola has constructed an update schedule for Android 2.1 and the Dext, Quench, and Backflip are all on the list as devices “under evaluation” to receive the Android OS 2.1 update.

We know you value having the latest and greatest technology on your devices. We are working very closely with Google and our carrier partners to bring you the most optimized experience on each of our smartphones powered by Android; this means appropriately releasing both operating system upgrades and software maintenance updates which enhance device functionality.

At this time, there are no definitive dates and the whole thing could just end without any devices receiving the updates, but if Motorola goes through with the update, how great would that be?!

Bell Launches Android Powered HTC Legend

On June 11, Virgin Mobile launched the HTC Legend. The device marked their first Android handset but Virgin was also the first in the North America to launch the Legend. Today, Bell has also released the HTC Legend.

The Legend marks Bell’s first Android device with Android OS 2.1 and will likely be the company’s next flagship device. Bell’s current Android devices, the Motorola Dext and Samsung Galaxy, both feature Android OS 1.5.

The HTC Legend from Bell is available for $79.95 with a 3-year agreement and $399.95 with no agreement.

Virgin Mobile Launches HTC Legend, Followed Soon By Bell

In the middle of May 2010, rumors pointed to Bell exclusively launching the HTC Legend, which would mark the company’s next flagship device after the Palm Pre.

The HTC Legend also marks Bell’s first Android device that will launch with Android OS 2.1. Bell’s current Android devices, the Motorola Dext and Samsung Galaxy, both feature Android OS 1.5, which severely limits a devices potential.

About a week later, in June, new rumors pointed to a June, 16 2010 launch day for the HTC Legend on Bell.

However this week, oddly enough before the official Bell launch, Virgin Mobile (a subsidiary of Bell) has launched the HTC Legend. Virgin’s first Android device is available for $79.99 with a 3-year agreement and $349.99 with no agreement.

Since Bell is the parent company, Bell typically releases the new devices first which are then picked up by Virgin. So having Virgin release the HTC Legend first is very different.

Bell To Release HTC Legend On June 16

In the middle of May 2010, rumors pointed to Bell exclusively launching the HTC Legend, which would mark the company’s next flagship device after the Palm Pre.

The HTC Legend is one of the most anticipated Android smartphones. From a hardware perspective, its form factor has captured the attention and praises of the press with its sleek aluminum unibody design, vibrant 3.2” AMOLED capacitive touchscreen and brushed metallic finish.

At the time of the rumor in May, reports pointed to a May/June 2010 launch time frame. We now have a confirmed date for launch on June 16, 2010. The device is set to launch for $79.95 with a 3-year agreement from Bell. Other device price points include $249.95 (2-year), $349.95 (1-year), and $399.95 (no agreement).

It seems that Bell is using the HTC Legend to target the HTC Hero from Telus and Sony Ericsson X10 from Rogers. Reports indicate that an internal Bell document contrasted the three devices together with a focus on the better features offered by the HTC Legend.

At the time of the release rumor, reports pointed to a May/June 2010 launch time frame. We now have a specific date for June 11, 2010.

While there is still no available pricing information, the device is likely to come in at $99.95 with a 3-year agreement from Bell.

Motorola Dext Now Available From Bell

After opened pre-orders by Best Buy, Bell has now officially launched the Android-powered Motorola DEXT. The Dext is one of three new social media Android devices coming from Motorola, along with the Backflip and Quench from Telus and Rogers respectively.

The latest Bell Android device is available for $79.95 on a 3-year agreement (or $399.95 with no contract) and is available at both Bell and Best Buy locations.

Best Buy had their stores and website ready to go yesterday with orders, and today Bell has everything up and running.

The Motorola Dext with MOTOBLUR syncs all your friends’ posts, messages, emails and photos and automatically delivers them to your home screen. Plus, it has a 5-megapixel camera and access to thousands of apps at Android Market.

Bell To Launch Motorola DEXT On May 14

Last week, rumors came out reporting a near release for the Motorola DEXT with MOTOBLUR by Bell. Best Buy opened preorders for the device and pricing rumors pegged the DEXT at $79.95 on a 3-year agreement.

Back in March, Bell confirmed plans to carry the Motorola DEXT but at the time revealed no pricing or release date. At this point, we have pricing but will no word on a releaes date until today.

New reports now point to a May 14, 2010 release date for the Motorola DEXT. The device will be available at both Bell and Best Buy locations nationally, with many Bell store locations already receiving demo units.

According to Bell,

“The Motorola Dext smartphone aligns with Bell’s strategy of offering a growing selection of Android smartphones. Today, Android is the second most popular mobile platform in the US and is now shipping over 60,000 handsets per day. Motorola Dext stands out among a growing number of Android devices. With unique social integration and security features offered by MOTOBLUR at no additional charge, Motorola has demonstrated its competitive edge in the mobile market. Dext will be a welcome addition to Bell’s growing portfolio of Android smartphones, with many more to come.”

The Bell document also details small changes that will appear on customers invoices that opt to purchase the Motorola DEXT.

“…customers will see the following line item appear on their invoices. It will help to identify they do have access to these services currently and to remind them to make the most of it. The line item will also help to illustrate the value of the services that Bell is bringing to clients.: “Motorola MOTOBLUR services……..$0.00”

The new invoice line will not add fees to a customers invoice but simply indicate that the customer is using the MOTOBLUR services included with their device.
