Telus Discontinues The HTC Hero

Wow. So that’s it huh? Not even a year into it’s life and gone already. That’s the pace of technology we live in though. I’ve got to a point where I switch my phone about every 6 months to stay ahead of the curve. Even though the previous phone is still perfectly capable and I’m far from falling out of love with it.

Well for whatever reason, Telus has decided to drop the HTC Hero. Nowhere to be found for online ordering but it might still be kicking around somewhere at your local retailer if you’re keen enough. Their Android line-up still remains fairly solid but the Hero will surely be missed.

Now you can probably bet that the 2.1 update that you’ve been desperately waiting for all this time is gonna be the last your phone ever sees. Unless, you take matters into your own hands that is. Feel free to share your condolences below and please, do be respectful.

Sucks for Hero owners but it actually makes sense for Telus. I just hope they keep getting more high end phones in, like the HTC Desire and the iPhone.

I too sympathize with the Hero owners. Our providers should have better support for our phones, especially for what we pay for.

That said, we can only hope that they get new phones in like the HTC Desire Z, HTC Desire HD, Motorola Droid 2 World Edition, etc. If they’re not going to provide adequate support for the phone we purchase and use with them.

It was just about 2 weeks ago that I suggested to Telus that they exchange my HTC Hero for another HTC Hero that has Android 2.1. This news sucks! since an exchange is not an option anymore. I don’t like the sounds of it! It would be really kind of Telus to get us the upgrade to Android 2.1. Else, I have given up hope since it does not make any sense to support a discontinued product.

@win7heartsdesire – I beg to differ. It does not make sense for Telus – given that by doing this they have pissed off a number of their customers and generated boatloads of google-searchable bad press.

AFAIK every other carrier offering the HTC Hero has managed to provide an Android 2.1 upgrade. It would not have killed Telus to do the same. Instead, Telus decided to figuratively spit on its customers.

Telus has had the desire and iPhone for quite a while now.

True but there are not a lot of new phones out there right now. Except for the Galaxy S line and the Droid 2 World ED. I don’t really care about these two phones since I don’t like Samsung phones (and they proved me right again with the GPS and lag issue). Also I don’t want a physical keyboard, just my personal preference. I don’t think Canada will get the new HTC phones, since they don’t run on North American 3G. And since the USA has the EVO and the G2 it’s really only Canada that does not get the phones. Well Canada’s not the biggest market, so they won’t start making phones just for us…Guess we’re gonna have to sit through this round.

This isn’t really a big surprise, since they’ve got the Desire now. And they’ll probably be getting the Milestone 2 as well.
