Samsung Galaxy S “ICS Value Pack” leak?

So owners of the original Galaxy line up (like myself) have had a real roller coaster of emotions since ICS was unveiled to the world.

We know how long it takes to get updates (having gone through 2 updates).  We figured Samsung had our back (they did offer 18 months’ support at one time), but we had that nagging doubt…

Then they then said that the line up wouldn’t get the update.  I was crushed, but it wasn’t a surprise.

Then we got teased with a media release saying they were re-evaluating their decision.

Then we heard that IF it comes, it wouldn’t be ICS, but a ‘value pack‘.

*Grumble Grumble*

Then news yesterday through the XDA vine discussed a possible leak of said Samsung “value pack ROM“.  I’m leery if it’s the actual deal, as it apparently is dated BEFORE Samsung was waffling … and it has a screen shot of the ‘face unlock’ feature.  How would that work?  You would have to turn the phone around, and then hope it’s pointed in the right spot…

Anyways, for those of you daring enough to flash it, go ahead and pick through the instructions on XDA (I’m this close to giving it a try).  There’s also some neat photo editing and camera UI features.

If you try it out, drop us a line!

I have contacts in Samsung’s android team and good friends at Bell.  I can provide some information:

    1)  Yes, this is the genuine Value Pack, although it probably isn’t final version.  There’s a lot more to come on this story;  but be warned that no matter what is released in the end: it will be rushed.  To paraphrase a certain someone, this update is just to shut people up.  The new features are a bunch of gizmos and gadgets that have been on the low-priority back burner for a while, and probably won’t be supported beyond day zero.  None of it is groundbreaking stuff, and half of it was started prior to the Galaxy S itself.   If it is released glitchy, it will very likely stay glitchy.  I’m told that the development cycle ends on this product in late February, and then it’s shelved.

    2)  Bell sees the Galaxy S as past it’s shelf life.  The word from my friend there is that there will be no more updates from Bell.  That is, unless the current rom is found to have some massive security flaw or an issue that could damage hardware.  Bell does not want to spend the money to apply their branding on a phone they don’t even sell anymore.

So yes, Samsung is releasing this Value Pack.  Yes the leaked pack is really from Samsung.  No, Canadians are not likely to get it.

PS.  Your comment system is packed with annoying scripts.  FYI.

do you know how the ‘face unlock’ would work?

Face unlock would work fine on some versions – like the Bell Vibrant, which has the front-facing camera.
