When Lenovo purchased Motorola from Google back in 2014, they had stated that they would keep the Motorola brand in tact. Fast forward to 2016 and that is no longer the case, at least not fully. Lenovo announced that they will be dropping the Motorola name from their products going forward. That’s right, the Motorola name that was synonymous with cell phone will fade away into the history books.
As sad as this news is, the Motorola brand won’t be completely dissolved. Lenovo has stated that the “Moto” brand will remain in tact. Lenovo plans to utilize the “Moto” brand for their high end products while their own “Vibe” line will focus on the budget devices. The signature “M” will also live on on these Moto devices but the actual Motorola name will soon be replaced by a blue Lenovo logo.
It’ll be interesting to see if and how the “Moto” design language changes as a result of this decision. Motorola devices have taken on their own look over the last few years, a look very different than some of Lenovo’s top tier devices. Will the company continue on with the signature dimple and rounded corners or will they rebuild from the ground up. Will they continue on with stock Android (something many love about Motorola) or will Lenovo begin adding their own twist to the OS. Only time will tell.
