Bell & Virgin Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant Updated to OS 2.3

Virgin Mobile and Bell released the OS 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant. We’ve been getting tipped that it’s now available to download via Samsung Kies. In addition, Virgin states that “the samsung galaxy S vibrant is good to go”. Unfortunately with a lot of Galaxy S phones, you are not able to just do a simple wireless upgrade. So you will have to pop your phone in to Samsung Kies to grab this update.

Good luck if you manage to update it. I’ve been working on this for an hour and no success.

      is your phone rooted???

If your phone is rooted, kies wont recognize your phone.

Good luck. I have been trying to connect my Galaxy S to Kies under both Mac OS Lion and Windows 7 64bits and no success. Big crap this Kies thing.

Yep… I hate kies and I know many others do too.

I had to do a full factory reset to get mine to connect. Went smooth after that though

No luck for me so far with Bell Galaxy S.  Kies recognizes the phone, tells me I have a firmware update but when it tries to apply the update it seems to lose it’s connection to the phone and then complains that the phone needs to be rebooted.  Doing so just starts things off at square one again.  Any one else seeing this?

Yup….Same problem here.  Phone just loses its connection with Kies.  I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling Kies on my computer but still no luck.  If there is one thing that would ever send me the way of apple, it would be the absolutely terrible updating procedure of these phones!!!

I was running into the same issue on Windows 7… i tried on another computer running XP and it was a breeze

I got the same error for Windows 7 and XP. Damn I hate Samsung and Kies. Why can’t they do this OTA or as a download to your PC?

Last evening I upgraded my Bell SGS Vibrant, was so easy and only took approx 20 minutes in total.
My Bell SGS Vibrant is a Oct 2010 model and I have had it from new and it has been an incredible phone.
I have added a 16 gb external SD card and I have a ton of work stuff and 200+ apps as well as am lot of music.
For this upgrade, I opened KIES and received a notification that a new version of KIES was available, hit the upgrade now button, waited for the KIES update to finish, then connected my phone and once it was recognized I got the pop-up that said a firmware UG was available, hit the Upgrade Firmware now button, checked the “back-up all file first” box and away it went and yes there were times over the next 15 minutes when it appeared the connection (computer to phone) was lost but I waited and everything went OK.
I have been running GREAT on FIRMWARE VERSION 2.3.3, “GINGERBREAD.GKG3 for 18+ hours!!!!

I noticed that when it starts running there is one of the shield icons that appears in the task bar that require you to give it a response on two occasions before the actual process begins. They don’t pop up like normal windows that require action, it just flashes in the task bar until you click on it. Similar to the little icon that appears when you have run a java update but need to install it. If you are not responding to the command responses it will time out. This may be why people running on XP have no issue, just Windows 7.
And always check that you have the usb icon with the three flashing dots on your phone saying that it is connected to Kies. I got it on the first shot.

I called Samsung and they had the balls to try and tell me that I had to contact Bell and get a temporary replacement phone while I send my phone in so they could do the update and send it back to me because my phone is unlocked and I use it on Rogers.

How many of you that are having problems with the update run a different launcher (LauncherPro, Go Launcher, etc)? For some reason, I found that I needed to restore my default launcher before Kies would recognize and connect to my phone. Try switching to your default launcher (See the app Home Switcher) then plug in your phone and see if Kies is able to connect. I haven’t tested this for the latest upgrade yet.
