Bell HTC Desire Z Updated to OS 2.3.3

Bell HTC Desire Z users will start the weekend off right! Looks like the update to Android OS 2.3.3 that Bell promised has been pushed through. This was expected to be “late Summer” but if you have a Desire Z you can now download this over the air. As usual, check settings > about phone > system software updates > check now.

(Thanks Jad!)

I just checked and there is no update available.

My phone was originally locked to Bell but has since been unlocked and is being used on the Rogers network. Should I still be able to get this update?

Yes, you should still get them even if the phone is unlocked

So, how come there’s no available update showing up? Is there a way to download to sd card through a computer and then install?

        • http://AndroidinCanada.ca Tom Gray

Some get it later then others. Happens to many people. There really is no explination why

I still haven’t gotten it, when I click on check for updates it says no updates are available.
Also, I just realized that my phone never even updated to version 2.2.1.  It is still at:
            Android Version 2.2
            Kernel Version 2.6.32.21
            Build number 1.34.666.1

Should my phone not have updated to version 2.2.1 before? Does this indicate that my phone has a problem with receiving updates from the network? Will the fact that I’m still running 2.2 impede me from receiving the 2.3 update?

Honestly I’m really unsure of your situation. You could try calling bell for support.

Turns out that you do need to be on the Bell network (i.e with a Bell sim card in your phone) in order to get the update. But, since I never got the previous update (which is now no longer available OTA) my phone won’t recognize the new update.
So, my options are to either root the phone and flash a custom mod (which I really don’t want to do) or send it in for service and have them install the current software for me (which means being without my phone for several days if not more).
Either way, I’m pretty unhappy about the whole situation. That’ll teach me to buy an unlocked phone. If only Rogers had more options of phones with qwerty keyboards.

Ouch, thats pretty brutal. I have never heard of that issue before.
I hope you’re about to get a good custom rom going to keep you happy with your phone still.

As soon as I read this post yesterday I was able to update to Gingerbread, so far so good!

I just got mine updated. When I first checked for the update I did it over the network and it said there was an update available. When I tried to download it over free wifi (I don’t have wifi at home or work), it kept telling me the download was corrupted. When I checked for the update again over wifi it said there weren’t any updates available. So I switched back to the network and found it again. I ended up going into a Bell store and the guy there was really helpful, he tethered my phone to his so I could get the download.

I had no problem receiving update notice on my unlocked HTC Desire Z running on Rogers. However after update and using it for 5 days I have some strange behaviours:

Cannot use “e” key on slide out keyboard! It either doesn’t work or takes me to email (just like a keyboard shortcut).

i jumped in and updated my bell branded htc desire z from 2.2.1 -> 2.3.3! running great on rogers, but i have had a couple of reboots when using the google navagation app.  also, wondering about that build in SIP / VOIP settings for the wifi calling at: from the home screen -> menu -> settings -> call -> internet call settings -> accounts    i tried added a couple different accounts but they just time out and fail to register…. not sure if i can get this working without adding the service to my rogers account.  would it be possible to extract the apk / app that is stock on the roger’s branded htc evo 3d?

I was auto-alerted earlier, didn’t want the 100+ MB on my data plan. Home, tried pass-through – “no updates available”. Associated with WiFi, tried twice, same – third time’s the charm. Updating now. Unlocked Desire Z, from Bell.
