I’ve been using WhatsApp since…. well how long smartphones been around?
It’s without a doubt one of the most popular 3rd party messaging services in the world and it just got better. The company recently announced that they have gotten rid of their $0.99/year subscription fee and will now offer WhatsApp completely free!
The primary reason for dropping the fee was to remove any potential barriers their users might face. Although $1 per year isn’t much, not all of their users had access to credit cards to pay for this fee which could push them to other apps that offer a similar service for free.
So how will WhatsApp make money going forward? The immediate assumption is that they will utilize ads to generate revenue, but thankfully that query was met with an emphatic NO! Rather, here is their business plan: “Starting this year, we will test tools that allow you to use WhatsApp to communicate with businesses and organizations that you want to hear from.”
Hopefully this won’t be too intrusive so we can all continue utilizing this amazing service!
