How To Track HTC Dream/Magic Cellular Data Usage

I was looking around the other day for an application that could track the cellular data usage of my Rogers data plan. I wanted something that was simple and relatively accurate, as I do not expect these types of apps to be 100% accurate.

Well my searching was rewarded with two applications; 3G Watchdog and NetCounter.

3G Watchdog

3G Watchdog monitors your cellular data usage (EDGE/3G) and your WiFi usage as well. The one thing I preferred with 3G Watchdog was that the status tracker is an icon in your notifications bar that changes color (green, orange, red) as your approach your data plan limit. However, the app also includes a detailed reporting page of your data usage, so you need not solely rely on the status icon.

NetCounter

NetCounter also tracks your cellular data usage (EDGE/3G) as well as WiFi. What I liked about this app was the ability to setup custom counters to track data such as “Last 30 days”, “Today”, “Weekly” and “Monthly”. Once setup, you can view them all together, with a separate area for Cellular Data and an area for WiFi.

Both apps are free and come highly rated but during my search, 3G Watchdog seemed to be the more recommended app. In any case, both are worthy contenders and are available in the Android Market.

If you have used these apps or other cellular data monitoring apps, let me know how they worked out for you and which you recommend.

This sort of app would be nice for the iPhone, too bad it will never happen unless is comes straight from Apple/Rogers
