Some pretty big news to kick off the week. According to an anonymous tip who is “close to the negotiations,” Google may be looking to purchase the super popular cross platform messaging application, WhatsApp. If this rumour does indeed turn out to be true it adds even more fuel to the idea that Google will be producing its own all encompassing messaging app called Babel.
In terms of the price, it looks like they’re currently offering the WhatsApp team a whopping billion dollars! That’s a pretty good pay day if you ask me and I’m sure it’s something that the WhatsApp team is closely considering.
If this deal does go through it’ll definitely be interesting to see how Google handles WhatsApp as they put together their own application. I honestly can’t see them simply removing the app from the multiple app stores but perhaps they’ll rename it and build on top of it. Or perhaps they keep it around until Babel is ready for prime time than cut it and replace it with Babel. Crossing my fingers that they don’t simply remove it as it’s an app I use on a regular basis.
